When I walked out of seeing The LEGO Movie for the very first time two weeks ago, I instantly wanted to head to my local LEGO Store and buy Benny’s Spaceship to take home and build–no matter what it cost! There was only one problem–the LEGO Movie Benny’s Spaceship set hadn’t been released (or even officially announced) at the time. Even so, we knew that the set was in the works, and at this week’s New York Toy Fair 2014, the LEGO Movie Benny’s Spaceship Spaceship SPACESHIP! 70816 was officially announced and revealed to the public!

I don’t think I have ever wanted to buy a LEGO set so badly in my entire life as I did when I saw the retro-style LEGO Movie Spaceship in all of its glory in the blockbuster, smash-hit The LEGO Movie. Knowing that the set wasn’t going to be available for another half-year was positively agonizing, but I managed to console myself with the knowledge that I’d get to see the beauty of LEGO 70816 in-person at the 2014 Toy Fair this week. I went, I saw, and I am positively in love with what is destined to be one of LEGO’s best-selling sets ever.

While it may not necessarily be the best LEGO Spaceship ever designed, The LEGO Movie Spaceship is going to be by far the one that most LEGO fans are going to have the strongest emotional attachment to. I’ve never cared much for retro LEGO spaceships, but even I feel like I have a deep-rooted sentimental need to own The LEGO Movie Spaceship Spaceship SPACESHIP! after seeing the movie.

The set will also include a small LEGO Robo Police Interceptor ship which is, quite frankly no match for Benny’s dream SPACESHIP!

LEGO 70816 Benny’s Spaceship, Spaceship, SPACESHIP! will come with six minifigures–and five out of the six minifigures are exclusives! While we’ve previously had the LEGO Movie Benny minifigure released with MetalBeard’s Sea Cow, this is the very first time we’ll be able to purchase a LEGO Astro Kitty Uni-Kitty minifigure, Astrosuit Wyldstyle, Emmet in Robot Disguise, TBA Robot, and Astronoaut Robo SWAT!

The hordes of Unikitty fans are going to be rabid for that Astronaut Uni-Kitty minifigure, that’s for sure!

70816 LEGO Movie Benny’s Spaceship, Spaceship, SPACESHIP! is scheduled to be released in August 2014. The set will contain 940 pieces and retail for $99.99 (which isn’t a great cost-per-brick, but in this instance I truly do not care).
