I’ve been more than a little bit negligent in my coverage of the Mattel Mega Bloks toys this year, but finally there’s a new theme coming out that I’m really excited about: Minions! And while most of the summer sets haven’t hit stores just yet, one major new release has now arrived: it’s the Minions Mega Bloks Build-A-Minion set, which lets you construct a Kevin Minion over 15″ tall!
But then a funny thing happened: I saw the movies and didn’t hate the Minions. In fact, it pains me to say that I love the Minions. So a movie all about the Minions this summer? Sign me up. And a Minions-themed construction kit line…? Take my money.
While all of the previous Mega Bloks Despicable Me Minions figures released (including the blind bag figures) have been around 2″ tall, you’d have to stack a lot of those Minifigures on top of each other to reach the height of this one: the Build-A-Minion Mega Bloks set allows you to construct a Minion model that stands over 381 mm (15″) tall!
That’s huge, and almost certainly the largest-scale Minions construction set that will ever be released!
Now, MEGA Brands Mega Bloks sets tend to be a mite cheaper than LEGO sets are to begin with, but I think that this Build-A-Minion set is a particularly strong value in comparison to other recent licensed sets we’ve seen. Containing 776 pieces for just $59.99, that’s less than 8 cents per piece! What a deal!!
Want to make your Build A Minion shorter? No problem! Want to turn his frown upside-down into a cheerful smile? Yep–this set has got you covered! And as an added bonus, there’s even a little 2″ Bob Minion micro-figure included as well! I sort of doubt that there’s a scene in the new movie where Kevin is humongous and Bob is itty-bitty, but it sure would be fun if the scale of these two figures was movie-accurate, wouldn’t it?
The Mega Bloks Minions Build-A-Minion set is now available at some Toys R Us stores and, well… that’s it! I’m not sure if this set is going to be a Toys R Us exclusive or not, but I definitely haven’t been able to find any mention of this set’s existence anywhere else! If you want this set, start checking your Toys R Us stores now!
Okay, Minions maniacs! Now that you’ve seen the largest and most elaborate Despicable Me Mega Bloks set ever, what do you think? Will you be building a 15″ Minion of your very own this summer, or are you content with the little Minions blind bags figures (or no Minions at all)?
Mega Bloks are rubbish.
I will not be collecting Minions, but I can understand people who do, mainly due to the pricing. Most of the kits are fairly inexpensive, so work well for children saving their allowances, or others on strict budgets. I think they are kind of cute, and there are so many you can often find one to “fit” just about anyone because of the occupation, hobby, etc. that a particular Minion may be portraying. However, I am not sure the people who collect the small Minion kits would necessarily be attracted to this larger one. To me, it kind of loses the “cute” factor as well as the portability factor that many parents may be looking for. Grabbing a couple of small Minions so your children are entertained on an outing is something many parents could do–not so much with this one (and how would the kids “play” with it if they did?).
I love the minions, but these are just not attactive at all. no playability, and the odd angles on this set just dont look good. Sure, kids and parents will buy 1 or 2 of these when they come out, but I just dont see these being a big hit – especially for what I am sure the license cost Mattel here.
Where is this available? I can’t find it anywhere
Right now it’s only showing up at Toys R Us stores.
