I meandered over to Toys R Us today as part of my weekly rounds, not expecting to find anything really interesting or new of note in the LEGO aisles. Turns out, though, that I was completely wrong about my chances of seeing something fresh and exciting, as staring me down from the shelves were all five of the LEGO TMNT 2014 sets, including the exclusive LEGO Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shredder’s Lair Rescue 79122 and the awesome LEGO Turtle Sub Undersea Chase 79121…
The set I was most anticipating–and the one I ended up buying on the spot–is the LEGO Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Turtle Sub Undersea Chase 79121. This is the largest of the 2014 TMNT non-movie LEGO sets, as it contains a whopping 684 pieces for $59.99. I find this set to be worlds more fun and creative than its equivalent from 2013 (the LEGO Shellraiser Street Chase), so I was psyched to be able to pick it up earlier than expected.
The new Shredder’s Lair Rescue LEGO TMNT set was also on-hand, although this set (which is exclusive to Toys R Us and LEGO Stores) actually had been marked-up to $54.99 from its MSRP of $49.99. I do want to pick up this set down the line, as I really like the way Shredder’s throne looks in the playset, but I’ll wait and pick it up for regular price from the LEGO Store.
The 79120 LEGO T-Rawket Sky Strike was also available in the store, but this is the set that I find the most unappealing of any LEGO Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles set revealed thus far. The UFO doesn’t look all that cool and the T-Rawket itself looks rather silly… this particular set just doesn’t do it for me.
With LEGO TMNT T-Rawket Sky Strike costing $34.99 for just 286 pieces, it’s also a pretty bad value as far as cost-per-piece goes. Other than the LEGO Kirby Bat minifigure, there’s nothing in this set that I feel like I really have to have.
Finally, we’ve got the awesome LEGO Karai Bike Escape 79118 and LEGO Mutation Chamber Unleashed 79119 sets. The LEGO Karai minifigure just may be my most-wanted LEGO minifigure of the year from any line (other than Benny the Spaceman, of course), and the LEGO Spider-Bytez Big Fig looks ridiculously fun and unique. Both these sets are ones that I’ll also be picking up to review on the site within the next few weeks.
The 2014 LEGO Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sets are now all available for order online. These are just now starting to hit Toys R Us and LEGO Stores, so it’ll probably be a few weeks before they’re plentiful at other retailers like Target and Walmart.
Now that they’re out there waiting to be purchased, which of the LEGO 2014 TMNT sets (if any!) will you be picking up, Ninja Turtles fans?
Just picked up the Karai and Mutation Chamber sets… I look forward to putting them together this weekend! I’m with you on the Kirby Bat set… looks kind of dumb… and feels a little cheap considering they just used that mold for Man-Bat… Plus, if we’re getting technical… in the TV series one of Kirby’s arms is deformed and neither are even a part of his wings. Oh well, I’ll still be getting it… it’s just the last one on my list… much to my surprise, I’m quite possibly more interested in the movie sets than the T-Rawket.
Oh, and that Turtle sub set it one of the most awesome sets that I’ve seen in a while… probably my favorite in the whole TMNT line. Just a little high in price for an impulse purchase though… will get it soon.
Went looking for the Turtle Sub at one of my local TRUs last night, did not find it. Will check the second tonight. If you use the 20% off Friends & Family coupon from this weeks ad flyer on it, it becomes $47.99 before tax.
