After the reveal of the LEGO Star Wars Ewok Village a few weeks ago, I genuinely thought we’d seen everything that LEGO had to offer for Summer/Fall 2013. But it seems that LEGO still had one humongous trump card left to play, and it finally unveiled it in full at Brickworld 2013 in Chicago tonight. It’s a set that we’d seen rumored a few weeks ago, that takes a set from LEGO Architecture line and super-sizes it like never before. Coming in September 2013–LEGO Sydney Opera House 10234!

“Whoa.”

That was my well-articulated reaction when I saw the first photos of the LEGO Creator 10234 Sydney Opera House. Given the underwhelming nature of the small LEGO Architecture Sydney Opera House 21012, I wasn’t expecting too much from the LEGO Creator Expert Sydney Opera House set. So when I took my first glance at the majesty of the new 2013 LEGO Sydney Opera House, I pretty much freaked out. As you might imagine, this Expert-level LEGO Creator Sydney Opera House puts the dinky 270 piece LEGO Architecture version to shame.

I’m gonna need to find a bigger apartment to make some space for this beast of a LEGO Creator Expert set, because this time, LEGO has done Australia’s greatest architectural masterpiece justice in truly gargantuan fashion. The LEGO 10234 Sydney Opera House measures 11″ high, 25″ wide and 15″ deep. That’s over two feet long and nearly a foot tall!! Unbelievable.

The new 10234 LEGO Sydney Opera House also includes a ton of rare and coveted LEGO bricks, including a never-before-released LEGO 48×48 blue base plate and a ton of dark tan slopes, tiles, and bricks. LEGO builders who had been pining away for a plethora of dark tan bricks are getting a real gift from the heavens here, and I am totally enamored with that gigantic blue base plate–it’s going to be great for making all kinds of seaside buildings and structures!

I was a little startled by the US $320 price tag on the LEGO Sydney Opera House–LEGO Tower Bridge 10214 contains 4,287 pieces for just $240, which is around 5 cents per brick–literally half the price per piece of the new 2,989 piece Sydney Opera House 10234. I presume that the extra cost is because some of the pieces of the LEGO Creator Sydney Opera House are much larger than that of Tower Bridge’s pieces, but it’s still hard to swallow a 100% increase in cost per brick from the Tower Bridge LEGO set to the new LEGO Sydney Opera House.
