Since the moment the “Man of Steel” Superman movie was announced, it was pretty much a foregone conclusion that LEGO would be producing LEGO Man of Steel sets. And this week, for the first time, LEGO unveiled the first new LEGO Superman movie set for the general public to oogle! It’s the 2013 LEGO Superman Metropolis Showdown 76002 set… but this first LEGO Man of Steel offering is a little bit less than inspired…
Let’s be real here for a moment: Superman does not have the world’s best Rogues Gallery. There’s Lex Luthor, and then there’s a huuuuuuuge drop off before you hit on Zod from the 1970s/1980s “Superman” movies. And after that, there’s, well… nobody anyone but diehard Superman fans have ever heard of.
But I digress–we already got a LEGO Lex Luthor minifigure in 2012, so DC Universe LEGO Superheroes fans will be thrilled to get the other Superman villain that anybody cares about in 2013 with the Zod minifigure. The Zod mini figure will be coming in several LEGO “Man of Steel” Superman sets, but the newly-debuted Superman Metropolis Showdown set will undoubtedly be the cheapest with its $12.99 price-tag.
Unfortunately, aside from LEGO Zod and Superman minifigures based on their appearances in the “Man of Steel” movie, the Superman Metropolis Showdown set is less than thrilling. You get one of the worst-looking LEGO cars in recent history, as well as a little piece of tower. I’m sure this set is based upon a specific scene in the “Man of Steel” movie, but as a set it’s largely lackluster.
While it’s not exactly the most amazing LEGO set this year (or any years, really), the Man of Steel LEGO Superman Metropolis Showdown 76002 will be available from LEGO retailers worldwide just a few months from now, as it hits store shelves in May 2013.
