Earlier today I posted about one of the LEGO Star Wars Summer 2013 Sets I thought might struggle at retail without a movie for support, and like many things in Star Wars… there is another. The LEGO Star Wars Duel on Geonosis 75017 is a strange set in that it gives you a speeder bike, two main minifigures and the forgettable environment that they fight in…
The stars of 75017 LEGO Duel on Geonosis are the two new minifigures: Yoda and Count Dooku. While we’ve (obviously) had minifigures of each of these guys before, we haven’t had non-Clone Wars versions of Dooku and Yoda minifigures in quite a while. I actually really love the Clone Wars Dooku minifigure from the 7752 Count Dooku’s Solar Sailer set from a few years ago, but it’s nice to have a Count Dooku minifigure that looks more like Christoper Lee and far less cartoon-y.
And since I mentioned the LEGO Star Wars Count Dooku’s Solar Sailer 7752 set, there’s another LEGO minifigure from that set recreated in this set in realistic form: Count Dooku’s Pilot Droid! This time out the Dooku’s Pilot Droid minifigure looks totally different, vastly differentiated from his previous Clone Wars minifigure incarnation. The LEGO Solar Sailer itself could pass for a movie or animated version, and you can pair it with this set and Pilot Droid figure to make the scene just like in Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones!
The fourth and final minifigure that comes with the 2013 LEGO Star Wars Duel on Geonosis 75017 will be none other than… Poggle the Lesser? Well, this one I really have no explanation for. He’s the leader of the Geonosians and this duel does take place on Geonosis (though Poggle isn’t there), but I guess this is as good a place as any to stick a Poggle the Lesser figure.
As for the Geonosian environment itself… it’s alright. There’s really not much to say about it. It consists of some archways and a pillar that can be knocked over as an action feature so that Dooku can escape. Honestly, the coolest thing about the environment is the LEGO Geonosian Speeder Bike that Dooku can flee to the hangar in–the rest of the environment is largely forgettable.
Despite four new minifigures, this set genuinely seems like it will be an extremely slow seller to me. We’ll find out this summer. The LEGO Star Wars 75017 Duel on Geonosis set is due out in July/August 2013 with a $39.99 MSRP for its 391 pieces.
