I kind of feel bad for LEGO. They went ahead and planned out their entire LEGO Star Wars Summer 2013 set selection in good faith that Attack of the Clones 3D and Revenge of the Sith 3D would be in theaters later this year–and, well, that’s not going to happen. The result is sets like this LEGO Star Wars Corporate Alliance Tank Droid that seem doomed to flounder at retail without movie support…
LEGO has released Corporate Alliance Tank Droids at retail before just four years ago (LEGO 7748 in 2009), and the Separatist tank wasn’t exactly a hit at retail at retail then. I remember seeing stacks of this vehicle on clearance at my Target just two years ago, which is hardly a good omen.
The one shining hope that this set has for being popular is its exclusive Jango Fett minifigure (the set’s knight in shining armor, if you will). Jango comes dual-wielding blaster pistols just like in the LEGO Star Wars video game, and just looks like a ton of fun. Unless you want a festive Jango Fett minifigure decorated up to look like Santa Claus, this is the set you’ll have to purchase to get a LEGO Jango Fett this year.
The Clone Trooper included is a plain old white Clone Trooper minifigure. It’s hard to get excited about that. On the other hand, we get a Geonosis red Battle Droid minifigure, which is at least more uncommon than the ubiquitous regular tan Battle Droids.
The other thing this set has going for it (besides Jango) is a pretty attractive price-point: just $19.99 for 271 pieces! At just 7 cents per piece, the 2013 LEGO Tank Droid set ends up being one of the most value-priced LEGO Star Wars sets that we’ve seen in years! Like I said, the $24.99 Tank Droid released in 2009 was a bit of a dud sales-wise, so giving this 2013 LEGO Star Wars Corporate Alliance Tank Droid a better price is certainly a good decision.
The 75015 LEGO Star Wars Corporate Alliance Tank Droid is scheduled to arrive in stores in July or August 2013 as one of the LEGO Star Wars Summer 2013 sets.
