Now that I’ve finished up discussing all of the LEGO Chima Summer 2013 sets, I want to move onto LEGO’s biggest (by far) licensed property with the LEGO Star Wars Summer 2013 sets. We were spoiled a little bit in the lead-up to the 2013 Toy Fair in New York City, as photos leaked out of a number of the summer LEGO Star Wars sets beforehand. Luckily, LEGO still had some surprises in store for us that hadn’t been shown all over the Internet already–including this LEGO Star Wars Mandalorian 75022 set with Cyborg Darth Maul minifigure!
The 2013 LEGO Mandalorian Speeder 75022 is a pretty passive vehicle that isn’t featured in any iconic scenes in the Star Wars Clone Wars cartoon series, much less the Star Wars movies. It has a turret in its rear and can fire a pair of missiles from the front, but it’s the sort of vehicle most people wouldn’t get excited over. Luckily, it comes with a trio of awesome LEGO Star Wars minifigures that I’m certain will keep this set from being a poor seller: a Cyborg Darth Maul minifigure and a pair of Mandalorian Super Commando minifigues.
The idea of a Darth Maul with his lower body replaced by technology originated in a comic book several years ago, and just last year Lucasfilm decided to make the idea Star Wars canon. In the Clone Wars, Darth Maul has cybernetic legs that allow him to be just as powerful and mobile (if not more) than he was before getting bisected by Obi-Wan Kenobi in The Phantom Menace! Darth Maul has always been an exceedingly popular character, and this essential Cyborg Darth Maul minifigure is exclusive to the Mandalorian Speeder 75022 and certain to make the set popular.
Unless you’re a hardcore fan of the (now cancelled) Star Wars Clone Wars cartoon, you’re probably scratching your head about just what a “Mandalorian Super Commando” is. The Mandalorian Super Commandos exist only in one episode of Clone Wars–“The Lawless”–in which they are loyal to the then-ruler of Mandalore, Darth Maul, and his “Shadow Collective” organization. They are opposed by their former Mandalorian Death Watch comrades, who oppose the idea of off-worlder Darth Maul ruling their planet. Or, to simplify things: the Mandalorian Super Commando minifigures are Darth Maul’s goons.
LEGO didn’t give the Mandalorian Super Commandos minifigures any unique sculpted parts like horns on their helmets or anything (some of the Commandos did have them in the cartoon)–these are just your standard Mandalorian trooper minifigures. But on the bright side (or should I say “the dark side”?), the Mandalorian Super Commandos have been accurately decorated in the red, black, and grey of Darth Maul’s Shadow Collective. I can always use more Mandalorian figures, and this faction is a must-have for my LEGO minifigures collection!
The LEGO Star Wars Mandalorian Speeder 75022 is part of the Summer 2013 LEGO Star Wars wave, and will contain 211 pieces for $24.99. The set should be on store shelves in July/August 2013.
