After over a year of waiting and buildup, Star Wars Celebration Anaheim has come at last! While the event itself won’t begin for a couple hours yet (what with being on the west coast and all), I saved my his-res photos from New York Toy Fair 2015 of one more mass-release LEGO Star Wars Summer 2015 set for discussion while we wait! I’d like to say I saved the most exciting sets for last, but, well… it’s not. Even so, the LEGO 75091 Flash Speeder is the first time the vehicle has gotten an upgrade in a full 15 years!
So, while I know that some people are getting fed up and rolling their eyes at the near-continuous flow of new sets we’ve been getting from The Phantom Menace for the last few years, I’m totally down with it. All of that said, even I did a double-take when a new LEGO Star Wars Flash Speeder was announced!
The original full-sized LEGO Star Wars Flash Speeder 7124 set was released in the year 2000–yes, fifteen years ago–at a price-point of $9.99. That particular set was pretty, well… blocky. It simply does not hold up to today’s higher standard of Star Wars builds.
And with the Flash Speeder being a highly obscure (and frankly unpopular) vehicle from the most unpopular Star Wars film, I wasn’t certain that we would ever see an upgrade to the initial release.
But my doubts on the matter came to an end at the 2015 Toy Fair in February, where I got to go up-close and personal with the entirety of the LEGO Star Wars Summer 2015 sets wave–including the 75091 Flash Speeder!
The new iteration of the Phantom Menace Flash Speeder is larger and far more detailed than the original (as you would expect from an upgrade of a 2000 set). Whereas the original was comprised of a scant 105 pieces (with a crazy-low $9.99 price-point!), this set consists of 312–almost triple that number.
And thanks to being released after 2014, it also features the spring-loaded missile launchers that I love so much!
The new Flash Speeder will include five minifigures, which is a solid number for a lower-priced set like this one: a Naboo Security Officer (only the third release ever of this character!), a Naboo Security Guard, two Battle Droids and a Captain Tarpals minifigure.
While he’s not specifically cited on the box as being “New!”, I believe that this is the first-ever LEGO Naboo Security Guard minifigure.
The Flash Speeder 75091 set will contain 312 pieces for $29.99. That manages to just pass my “perfect” LEGO value of 10 cents per piece, which is terrific considering how many other licensed (and non-licensed!) sets are failing to meet that standard this year!
The Summer 2015 LEGO Star Wars Flash Speeder 75091 set will be officially released in June 2015, but we’ll be seeing it turn up at Toys R Us and LEGO Stores in mid-May 2015–just about one month from now! Look forward to it!
What do you think of the first Flash Speeder LEGO set to be released in 15 years, Star Wars fans? Are you psyched to add this rarely-produced vehicle to your collection, or is the oft-forgotten (even by me!) Flash Speeder just not something that you can get excited about?
i also get made fun of for not just liking this movie, but for liking the movies in the prequel trilogy better in general
this looks like a great little set to get
I love this set!
Oh yes i want it! The minifigs will go with my Captain Panka figure
The set looks great as it is, but I think adding one more figure (maaybe Qui-Gon or Padme) would really make me buy it considering we haven;t gotten these figures for several years and there were in expensive sets!
Awh man I remember having this set in 1999 and then 10 years later, while trying to rebuilt it I couldn’t even find half of pieces. This will finally put an end to my sadness.
