LEGO Star Wars First Order Special Forces TIE Fighter 75101!

Yesterday I discussed the modern reinterpretation of one of the most recognizable fictional vehicles in history: the Star Wars Episode VII First Order Snowspeeder 75100. But that’s not the most famous vehicle that the Imperials are bringing to the new movies–and one I’ll be talking about today looks far, far more like we remember it than the Snowspeeder does! Coming to our retail galaxies for Force Friday this week, it’s the LEGO Star Wars First Order Special Forces TIE Fighter 75101!

75101 LEGO Star Wars First Order Special Forces TIE Fighter Box

Of all the Imperial vehicles that appear in the original Star Wars movies trilogy, there is none more iconic than the Imperial TIE Fighters. The sheer number of iterations of various TIEs released as LEGO sets over the years is already overwhelming (if anyone wants to tally up the total number of different sets with TIEs of any kind in them, leave a reply and help me out!), and now it’s time to add one more all-new version to the list!

There’s not a whole lot of action features you can integrate into a TIE Fighter, but this First Order Special Forces version will feature the two most important ones: an opening cockpit that can fit two pilots (more on this shortly) and dual spring-loaded shooters! I love the spring-loaded missile-launchers, and I’m glad to see them carrying over to the Force Awakens sets.

LEGO Star Wars Episode VII First Order Special Forces TIE Fighter SetIn addition, I think that the way the red portions of the ship are made of angular red pieces looks absolutely awesome. These red areas are what most set this Episode VII TIE Fighter apart from previous renditions of the ship, so I love the terrific design choice made here!

Like past versions of the TIE Fighters, be prepared for the Star Wars The Force Awakens First Order TIE Fighter to take up a considerable amount of space on your shelf. Each new 75101 LEGO Special Forces TIE Fighter will stand 9″ tall, 7″ wide and 7″ long. Obviously, those who want to build a fleet of these starships may need to get a bigger display room!

LEGO Star Wars Force Awakens Minifigures TIE Pilots TIE Crew Officer

As I mentioned earlier, this Star Wars Episode VII TIE Special Forces ship will feature a two-figure cockpit. Maybe these new ships will be more effective with a second pilot in there to give support? Let’s hope so (for the Empire’s sake–or the First Order… or whatever).

The set will include four Minifigures: a First Order Crew, a First Order Officer minifigure and two First Order TIE Fighter Pilots. I’m not really sure what the role of a “First Order Crew” is going to be, but I’m definitely dying to find out!

All four of these Minifigures are unique to this set, so if you want to have a complete LEGO Force Awakens minifigures collection, then you’re going to have to buy this set to do so (although, I imagine anyone hardcore enough to want a complete TFA minifigure collection would be buying this new TIE Fighter anyway, but I digress).

First Order Special Forces TIE Fighter LEGO Star Wars Episode VII SetAs cool as this sleek black and red 75101 First Order Special Forces TIE Fighter LEGO set looks, there is a downside to this set, and it’s (predictably) the price: $69.99 for 517 pieces. That’s about 13.5 cents per piece, which is definitely well above the ideal price-point.

Poor value or not, I’ll be picking up one of these LEGO 75101 First Order TIE Fighter sets on my birthday this week–which just happens to be Force Friday (9/4/2015). What about you, Star Wars fans? Are you planning on adding this new version of an iconic ship to your collection this summer, waiting for a sale, or skipping this neo-classic TIE altogether?

  1. LEGO has released 23 sets featuring TIE vehicles. In order by set number (re-releases count as the same set, while combiner models don’t count here):
    TIE Fighter: 3219 (Mini), 7146, 7263, 7958 (Mini), 9492, 10131 (2 included), 75056 (Mini)
    TIE Bomber: 4479, 75008 (Mini)
    TIE Advanced: 4484 (Mini), 7150/7152/7262, 8017, 10131, 10175 (UCS), 10188 (small), 852115 (keychain), 4520686 (bag charm)
    TIE Interceptor: 6206, 6965 (Mini), 7181 (UCS), 9676 (Mini)
    TIE Defender (Expanded Universe): 8087
    Droid TIE (Expanded Universe): 10131

  2. you’d think that the First Order Special Forces would have access to a better version of the TIE, like an Interceptor or a Defender rather than the rinky dink rank and file TIE fighters. these will just make prettier explosions with their red decals, and lose two pilots per fighter vs. the standard one.
