With just four days to go until Force Friday (the legendary launch date of hundreds of Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens toys), it’s time to move forward and take a look at the fourth of six new LEGO Star Wars Force Awakens sets that will be available on Force Friday at the end of this week! The first three sets that I looked at were new-age versions of old army vehicles, but this one is a bit removed from that: it’s the LEGO Rey’s Speeder 75099 set–the cheapest of all the day one Episode VII sets!
All that said, one thing that we do know for sure is that Rey must be important to the new movies in some manner, because she’s getting loads of merch on day one when the Force Awakens toys deluge begins! And the cheapest source for a LEGO Rey minifigure is Rey’s Speeder 75099.
It’s pretty much impossible to look at the colors on this speeder and the Tatooine-like desert background and not feel a callback to Luke’s Landspeeder from Episode IV: A New Hope. This Force Awakens Speeder isn’t exactly loaded with features, but it does have an opening storage hatch and dual stud shooters integrated.
Priced at $19.99 for 193 pieces, Rey’s Speeder is just about on target for my ideal value of ten cents per piece. It also has the distinction of being ten dollars cheaper than the next smallest Force Awakens LEGO set, making it the single least expensive set from the new movie that will be available until the winter.
The set is packed in with just two minifigures: Rey and Unkar’s Thug. There’s no “Unkar” included with any of this first wave of sets, so beats me who he is or why we should care about his thug (though Unkar’s Thug does come with a cool-looking gold crowbar). Meanwhile, the Rey minifig will include a sand-blocking mask and some sort of staff, and is available in this set as well as the $150 Millennium Falcon (meaning most folks will be getting her here).
The LEGO Star Wars Rey’s Speeder set will be available for order online and in stores at the stroke of midnight on Friday, September 4th 2015. With 75099 Rey’s Speeder being the very cheapest of the Episode 7 LEGO sets that will be available on Force Friday, I’ve a hunch that it will be one of the first sets to sell out, as collectors scramble to gobble up as many toys as they can afford that day. Personally, I’ll be passing on this set until I see the movie and determine if Unkar’s Thug is something I just can’t live without.
What do you think of the lowest-priced set of the first wave of LEGO Star Wars Episode VII toys, brick fans? Will you be picking up this new-era speeder this year for your collection, or are you waiting to see if this vehicle is actually heavily-represented in the new movie(s) before making your judgment on it?
