Among the many compelling mysteries fans are dying to have answered in the Star Wars: The Force Awakens movie next month is the true identity and background of the mysterious, Sith-like Kylo Ren. Following the release of the full Episode VII trailer and its absence of a certain Jedi Master, crazy rumors started swirling about Kylo Ren potentially being Luke Skywalker. Photos from the set seemed to disprove those allegations, but now we can officially confirm it via the merch: the 2016 LEGO Star Wars Battle of Takodana 75139 set gives us the first-ever unmasked Kylo Ren figure–and he’s definitely not Luke Skywalker!
Until now.
The European web toy store, The Entertainer, has released the first images of the latest Winter 2016 LEGO Star Wars The Force Awakens sets, and these images include our first close-up look at an unmasked action figure of Kylo Ren! Let’s zoom in and take a look…
So, uh, yeah. Kylo Ren with his mask off looks pretty much exactly how we expected him to look based off of the official movie photo stills. He’s a young, long-haired man, and there is no room left for doubt–Kylo Ren is definitely not Luke Skywalker.
There is a passing resemblance to Rebels’ Ezra Bridger, but Ezra would (of course) be far too old to be this young man by the era of Star Wars Episode VII.
Besides the Unmasked Kylo Ren Minifigure, LEGO 75139 Battle on Takodana is a pretty solid–if a bit boring–little playset. I love fall trees, and the tree with its orange leaves and the accompanying muted structure remind me a bit of the terrific Lord of the Rings Council of Elrond set that I reviewed a few years back.
This set includes five minifigures (unmasked Kylo Ren, Finn, two First Order Stormtroopers and an exclusive little alien whose name I can’t read), and contains 409 pieces. $39.99 would be the “fair” price for this in the United States, but as its European price is £49.99, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the MSRP for this set run $49.99 USD.
That would be over 12 cents per piece, which is a bad value for what I see in these photos, but the set would still cost lost than half the amount of the next-cheapest set with a Kylo Ren minifig, so I guess the set would be worth it to many collectors at that cost.
What do you think of the Battle of Takodana LEGO Star Wars 75139 set, brick fans? Do the cool alien building and Kylo Ren Unmasked figure compel you to purchase this $40-$50 set this winter, or are there other sets that will be more of a priority to you as we skate into the new year?
The alien is probably Maz Kanata, at least that’s my guess.
I’m A fan of kylo ren so I’m 100% sure I’m geting it.
