When it rains, it pours! And now we can add Star Wars to the list of themes having Winter 2016 LEGO sets photos pouring this week. The Star Wars Microfighters were a sub-line that I honestly thought was going to bomb in stores, but it turned out that these low-priced, chibi-fied Star Wars vehicles were a major hit with kids and many collectors. And now, they’re back for another round: the LEGO Star Wars 2016 Microfighters sets have now been revealed–along with the winter’s only regular-sized Rebels set!
Never tell them the odds!! After the total flop that was the Star Wars Planets line, I seriously doubted we’d see a Micro Fighters Series 2. But this little sub-line has proven that it has some legs (or engines, I guess), and this winter we’re now up to Star Wars MicroFighters Series 3!
While previous waves have featured six vehicles in them, the winter 2016 wave is going to be a mite lighter, with just four new vehicles representing the Star Wars Universe. But while this series may not be quite as large as we’re accustomed to, I really love the sets that are on the way!
First up we’ve got a set for Rebels fans: The Ghost! With the regular-sized The Ghost set scheduled to retire this winter, I’m glad to see that the main spacecraft from the series will live on in Microfighters form. And hey, a cheap and easy way to acquire the Hera minifigure! Thanks, TLG!!
Also representing the Rebels cartoon, it’s the cutest AT-DP ever! The chibi Micro-Fighters AT-DP 75130 is about as simple of a design as you can get, but it’s also a pretty gosh-darn cute one!
The regular-sized AT-DP set released last year was a disappointment to me, so again, I think it’s great to be able to get the AT-DP Driver minifigure now for a super-low price.
Next up, we’ve got a set from Rebels (are you beginning to see a trend here, readers?), the MicroFighters Wookie Gunship 75129!
Now this set is a real baffler. The Wookies have appeared only once in the cartoon series, the Wookie Gunship did next to nothing, and this is already the second set of the vehicle! Kids love Wookies, so maybe the Wookie minifigure will make this set a success, but I’m definitely concerned that this could be an outright dud release that warms shelves at retail for years.
LEGO TIE Advanced Prototype 75128 Microfighters Set
Rounding out this series of MicroFighers Series 3 sets is a set from (surprise!) Rebels: the LEGO TIE Advanced Prototype 75128. This is another cute TIE Fighter, but I’m admittedly baffled as to why this set comes with a standard TIE Pilot instead of the individual who actually flies the ship in the cartoon: The Inquisitor.
I don’t know if TLG didn’t want to include a dead character or what (it never stopped them with Darth Vader, that’s for sure), but I think the sales of this set would have been vastly better if it included the Inquisitor minifigure.
That said–at least in these initial photos–I’m a tad worried. None of the minifigures included here are particularly exciting (did we really need a third Kanan minifigure already?), the expected price-point of $29.99 is surprisingly high for what’s included here (just 234 pieces), and is it just me, or does the photo on the box make it look like this Speederbike is way too big for the Kanan minifig? Poor Kanan’s arms don’t look like they can get anywhere near the handlebars!
The LEGO 2016 Star Wars Microfighters and Kanan’s Speeder Bike sets will be available online and in stores by January 1st, 2016, although I suspect we’ll actually begin seeing these sets arrive early and appear by mid-December 2015. Let’s hope that these hit as many stores as possible before the holidays, because I think the Micro-Fighters LEGO sets probably have the highest appeal of any Star Wars sets as far as stocking stuffers go!
What do you think of the 2016 LEGO Star Wars Microfighters and Rebels sets, Star Wars fans? Are you hoping to find any of these toys under your tree this holiday season, or are you holding out for bigger and better construction sets this winter?
what are those things at the bottom of their feet on the last picture
simple lego discs .. standard parts
Cool, now i can get a Hera and a wookie figure for little money
This is great!
I just LOVE microfighters. The full-size versions of these ships are pretty much impossible for kids to play with. We have a lot of fun doing epic space battles in our house with these b/c they fit right in your hand! I collect a few of my favorites myself, and The Ghost with Hera is definitely the stand out here. Is it just me, or do some of these sets seem a little low on the piece-count? It doesn’t seem that there’s much to the ATDP and Wookiee Gunship- they could use a bit more bulking up. The Tie fighter looks cool, but it’s not THAT different than the one from Series 1. Maybe if they had done a Tie with The Force Awakens red and a First Order trooper I would consider it.
the handlebars on the speederbike ARE very baffling to me. also, i hope the thermal detonators aren’t all stickers; that’s super annoying. that’d be like 10+ stickers for this set.
Every 2016 list of Lego sets I’ve seen mentions two other Microfighters. A hero starfighter and a villain starfighter, they are most likely from the Force Awakens, which explains why we haven’t seen them yet.
Yes! I’m hoping for Poe’s X-Wing!
