I usually have pretty good instincts when it comes to predicting how well LEGO sets are going to sell at retail, but I was totally off the mark regarding one of the new sub-themes introduced in 2014. Not only did the LEGO Star Wars Microfighters Series 1 sets not bomb like I thought they were going to, but I even grew to like the sets myself and ended up buying them! And in January 2015, LEGO will release another half-dozen chibi-fied little Star Wars vehicles–the Microfighters Series 2 LEGO Star Wars 2015 sets have now been revealed!
2015 LEGO Star Wars 75074 Snowspeeder Microfighters Series 2 Set
I really, truly thought that LEGO Star Wars fans were going to utterly reject the cutesy designs that LEGO had created for this year’s inaugural wave of LEGO Star Wars Micro Fighters set. Instead, LEGO Microfighters Series 1 turned out to be a bonafide hit, combining adorable little Star Wars vehicles with a sometimes-unique minifigure for $9.99. LEGO may have finally found its winning formula when it comes to LEGO Star Wars sets at the $9.99 price-point!
The bright orange/white/grey color scheme is naturally cute to begin with, and by removing the hatch that’s usually part of the Snowspeeder’s design, the included LEGO Snowspeeder Pilot minifigure fits right in his normal spot in the Snowspeeder (sort of).
LEGO Star Wars 2015 Sets AT-AT 75075 (Microfighters Series 2)
AWWWWWWW!!! Aren’t you just the sweetest little Imperial Walker ever?! AWWWWWW!!!
No, really–the 75075 LEGO Microfighters Series 2 AT-AT is absolutely darling. We’ve all seen super-deformed AT-AT artwork in books and on shirts, and this is like the cutest of those designs brought to life. Definitely a winner as far as I’m concerned, and a cheap place to get a LEGO AT-AT Driver minifigure if you can’t afford a regular-sized LEGO AT-AT set.
LEGO Star Wars 2015 Homing Spider Droid 75077 Microfighters Series 2 Set
Some things were never meant to be cute, and I think that the Separatist Homing Spider Droid just might be one of them. It’s cuter than it usually is, that’s for sure, but it’s still a pretty creepy-looking Spider Droid. This is a pass for me, but I’m sure kids who like bugs and spiders and that sort of thing may think that this is super-cool.
There’s also a LEGO Geonosis Battle Droid minifigure included with the set, enchancing its appeal for those still needing to amass red Battle Droids for their Separatist armies.
LEGO Star Wars 2015 Republic Gunship 75076 Micro Fighters Series 2 Set
The LEGO Star Wars Republic Gunship 75076 Microfighters set unfortunately comes out looking a bit too fat and dopey for my liking. While I’m usually all over a new LEGO Republic Gunship, this particular one ends up being my least favorite of the five revealed LEGO Star Wars Microfighters 2015 sets (despite have the best price-per-piece ratio of any of the sets in LEGO Microfighters Series 2).
LEGO 75076 does include a LEGO Clone Pilot minifigure, although one of those already comes with basically any set you’d need a Clone Pilot figure for, so this isn’t a set most fans are likely to want to army-build with.
2015 LEGO Star Wars Vulture Droid 75073 Set Micro Fighters Series 2
I think it’s sort of weird that LEGO included a LEGO Pilot Battle Droid minifigure with this set, what with the Vulture Droids being “sentient” and not needing a pilot and all, but I understand nothing else really made sense to include here. And I suppose I can always use more LEGO blue Battle Droids!
The LEGO Microfighters Series 2 Winter 2015 sets are scheduled to be released in January 2015, although LEGO would be wise to get a healthy amount of these sets out to stores sooner–they’ll make great LEGO Stocking Stuffers for the holidays (if they actually make it to retail on time!). I’ll post an update here and to the Bricks and Bloks Facebook Page when the LEGO Star Wars Microfighters ARC-170 Fighter 75072 images finally make an appearance, so stay tuned.
Are the super-cute interpretations of Star Wars vehicles in LEGO Star Wars Microfighters Series 2 up your alley, LEGO fans, or will you be leaving these low-priced LEGO sets in the aisles at your local store for someone else to adopt and bring into a good home?
My kids and I love the microfighters line! Unlike the larger Lego vehicles, these are well suited for pretend play space battles with 1 in each hand! The first wave was pretty awesome with two exceptions, the clone and battle droid sets. A clone or a battle droid (even a stormtrooper) doesn’t really have the “I MUST buy that” appeal. Better minifigs would help. With series 2, the only two sets that we would get are the two Hoth ones, but even those minifigs are a bit disappointing. Why not have a rebel Luke with lightsabre instead of the random rebel pilot? Why do three of the new sets feature battle droids and generic clones? It seems to me that there are far cooler vehicles and minifigures to be considered: Jawa sandcrawler, Leia/Luke with a speeder bike, the Bespin cloud car with Lando, Slave I with Bona Fett, a sandspeeder, Jabba’s sail barge, Anakin and a pod racer, Hondo and his flying saucer, something from the new Rebels series… I’m really glad the line is continuing, but are they just randomly picking these vehicles?
Agree with Ben. Why not have 2 of these as Rebels vehicles to get kids into the new cartoon.
And my other suggestion (as I have a son and 2 daughters) is why not include a girl character? Rebels would’ve been good cause you have Hera and Sabine but Ahsoka, Shaak Ti, Leia and Padme are all favourites in my house.
I was not enthusiastic either about the Microfighters, but after I picked up the 2015 Snowspeeder at the same time as the 2014 X-Wing and Millenium Falcon, I like them a lot more. Yes, they are cute, and a simple easy build. And for the Snowspeeder in particular, the front end plate is printed, not a sticker. Sweet! I’ve got the larger Snowspeeder released in 2014, along w/the 2014 AT-AT, and the Microfighter is much closer in relative size to the AT-AT, for some quick swoosh attacks, than the fuller size Snowspeeder. Now I can switch Luke as the pilot with the Microfighter mini-fig when he goes after the AT-AT with his lightsaber.
