Last night I posted my impressions of the four 2014 LEGO Star Wars Battle Packs sets, so today let’s take a look at the remaining seven (non-exclusive) LEGO Star Wars 2014 sets! The LEGO Star Wars winter 2014 sets aren’t the most inspired group of vehicles ever, as we’ve had all of these sets but one before, but are there enough advancements and improvements to make them worthy of a new release…?
2014 LEGO Star Wars Republic AV-7 Anti-Vehicle Cannon 75045: The 75045 LEGO AV-7 Cannon is the one and only truly new set amongst all these upcoming LEGO Star Wars sets (though we’re likely to be getting another new vehicle as a store exclusive–more on that soon). I’m a little disappointed that we’re apparently getting two generic LEGO Wolf Pack Clone Troopers minifigures and no LEGO Commander Wolffe, but maybe LEGO is saving Commander Wolffe for another set?
Regardless, the LEGO Republic AV-7 Anti-Vehicle Cannon looks really, really good. It’s not the most iconic LEGO Star Wars set by a longshot, but LEGO has done an excellent job of recreating the cannon in bricks form.
2014 LEGO Star Wars Jedi Interceptor 75038: This seems like about the millionth time LEGO is making one of Anakin Skywalker’s Jedi Starfighters, it’s actually only the fifth one they’ve ever done (counting the green Jedi Interceptor). This LEGO 75038 does look very polished and well-done, and is probably the best version of Anakin’s Starfighter/Interceptor LEGO has ever done. I already have my fill of LEGO Jedi Starfighters, but I’ll be hard-pressed not to add another one this winter!
2014 LEGO Star Wars Vulture Droid 75041: Trivia time! This may shock some people, but the 75041 LEGO Star Wars Vulture Droid is actually the first time that a (non-mini scale) LEGO Vulture Droid will be available individually! I’ve got a soft spot for Vulture Droids (as crazy as that sounds), so I’m looking forward to army-building a couple of these.
For minifigures, we get a LEGO Buzz Droid minifigure, a LEGO Pilot Battle Droid minifigure, and a LEGO Neimoidian Soldier minifigure. I haven’t a clue what the Neimoidian Soldier has to do with a Vulture Droid (which is capable of piloting itself), but it’s refreshing to get a brand-new Neimoidian minifigure in this LEGO 75041 set.
2014 LEGO Star Wars General Grievous’ Wheel Bike 75040: The LEGO Star Wars 75040 General Grievous’ Wheel Bike set is probably the single biggest improvement over its previous set of any of the Winter 2014 LEGO Star Wars sets. The 2005 LEGO Star Wars General Grievous Chase 7255 is one of my least-favorite LEGO Star Wars vehicles ever, so I am all-out totally delighted by this new and way better version of the General Grievous Wheel Bike!
The only thing that makes me sad about this 75040 LEGO set is that there’s no new LEGO Boga included. Where the heck is Obi-Wan jumping out at Grievous from–the sky?! We really, really needed a new Boga LEGO minifigure, and now I’m not sure we’ll ever get one. Still a fantastic LEGO set, though, and possibly my favorite of all the LEGO 2014 Star Wars sets we’ve seen thus far.
LEGO Star Wars 2014 V-Wing Starfighter 75039: Though I wouldn’t even remember that the V-Wing Starfighter was in the movies if toy companies stopped making toys of it, LEGO is back for their third LEGO V-Wing. Luckily, the LEGO 75039 V-Wing Starfighter looks much smoother and more realistic than its prior releases. This is the definitive V-Wing Starfighter LEGO set, which is good, since I wouldn’t hold my breath for this vehicle to see another release for at least another half-decade.
It seems very weird to me that the LEGO Astromech Droid minifigure included in this 2014 LEGO V-Wing set is generic, though–LEGO usually at least tries to give us unique designations for the LEGO Astromechs.
LEGO Star Wars 2014 Droid Gunship 75042: Oh my, this was unexpected. The 2008 LEGO Star Wars Droid Gunship 7678 set rotted on shelves, and I really never expected to see a Droid Gunship LEGO set again. But owing to the now-cancelled release of Star Wars Revenge of the Sith 3D, LEGO decided to give another LEGO Droid Gunship a chance. Honestly, though, this set looks destined for the bargain bin–I don’t expect LEGO 75042 to sell very well, especially with such an uninspired grouping of minifigures.
LEGO Star Wars 2014 AT-AP 75043: Finally, we have the LEGO 75043 AT-AP. This new version of the LEGO AT-AP was the first LEGO Star Wars winter 2014 set shown off by LEGO, way back at San Diego Comic Con 2013. This is the largest of the winter LEGO 2014 sets, and another set that drastically improves on the earlier AT-AP LEGO models. I’m not exactly the biggest fan of AT-APs in general, as they don’t do a whole lot in the Star Wars saga, but the Clone Commander Gree LEGO minifigure is the highlight of this set, and turns this set from one I’d probably pass on to one I’ll definitely be picking up.
What do you think about the LEGO Star Wars Winter 2014 sets, LEGO fans? Are you disappointed to see the wave composed primarily of redone sets, or are you impressed with all the improvements that LEGO has made?
actually, a vulture droid was released individually during the first few waves of star wars sets
Ah, you’re thinking of the 1999 LEGO Star Wars Droid Fighter 7111. I’m not considering that one a Vulture Droid, as it has the generic “Droid Fighter” moniker. It probably is intended to be a Vulture Droid (in fact, almost certainly), but it’s so under-detailed that I only think of that as a generic Droid Starfighter.
It was a Vulture Droid, but it wasn’t blue since it was from episode 1. It was a trade federation Vulture Droid. This is the first individually-packaged CIS Vulture droid, which is a slightly modified Trade Federation Vulture Droid.
Hmm… These new blasters in the battle packs aren’t in these bigger sets. The bigger launcher is though…
i cant wait for the at-ap and the av cannon
if you ask me i think Lego should make more old republic sets
