Coming off of last week’s insanely hectic New York Toy Fair 2015/Blizzard trip, I’m backlogged on everything. In fact, I hadn’t even been out to a retail store in a whole week, which must be some kind of record for me! But I broke that streak today, as I headed back to my favorite local Toys R Us stores, where I found the majority of the March 2015 LEGO sets–including the whole wave of the first-ever series of LEGO Speed Champions sets!
LEGO Speed Champions Porsche 911 GT Finish Line 75912 Set (511 Pieces for $49.99)
When I say that I know little to nothing about professional racing and race cars and all that jazz, I am absolutely not lying. I don’t have the slightest clue what any of the cars in these sets are or how authentic they are to their real-world aesthetics and appearance.
75911 McLaren Mercedes Pit Stop LEGO Speed Champions 2015 Set (332 pieces for $29.99)
All that said, I can appreciate that these are some rather snazzy looking vehicles. I can see where this set would have a ton of appeal to racing fans and just collectors in general who like fancy, famous cars. My favorite one of these cars is easily the orange and white car in the 75912 LEGO Porsche 911 GT Finish Line set, although I don’t know that I’d be willing to pay out $49.99 for that larger set just to build a pretty orange car.
LEGO Speed Champions 458 Italia GT2 75908 & LaFerrari 75899 Sets ($14.99 each)
There are four small-sized sets that I expect to be the best-sellers from the Speed Champions LEGO sets this year, as each set contains 151 pieces to 168 pieces for $14.99. I think that’s a price-point where a lot of parents and gift-buyers won’t flinch buying a treat for their child, whereas the $50-$100 sets will be a lot harder to swallow for casual buyers.
LEGO Speed Champions McLaren P1 75909 & Porsche 918 Spyder 75910 (14.99 each)
The four $14.99 sets available this year are an awesome-looking Pikachu-colored (yellow and black) McLaren P1, a silver/grey Porsche 918 Spyder, a red LaFerrari and a red 458 Italia G2.
I’ll admit that I am definitely really tempted by that Bumblebee-like McLaren P1, so it’s likely that I’ll end up buying that set at some point this year. I love the little LEGO traffic cones that it comes with!
LEGO Speed Champions F14 T & Scuderia Ferrari Truck 75913 (884 pieces for $99.99)
The final set in the 2015 LEGO Speed Champions sets theme is the 75913 F14 T & Scuderia Ferrari Truck (try saving that three times fast!). This set includes an entire racing team of six minifigures (and yes, there’s even some female figure representation on the race team!), as well as a championship trophy, an F14 race car, a scooter and a racing team hauler truck (it reminds me of Mack from Pixar’s “Cars”!).
Now that you’ve seen boxed photos of all of the LEGO 2015 Speed Champions sets, what do you think of the theme, LEGO fans? Will you be racing (Ha–I slay me!) out to stores for these race car sets, or is Speed Champions a theme that you can live without?
I love these! I think they are priced right and are super awesome. The only thing I wish they did was make some kind of track so you could use the sets to make a whole race track scene.
These sets are cool, but I’m saving my money for Scooby Doo. 🙂
I want dat porsche sooo bad
