Following up on the in-depth look at the LEGO Scooby-Doo Haunted Lighthouse 75903 set from yesterday, today I’m going to take a look at another one of Summer 2015 Scooby-Doo sets that I previously only took a cursory glance at. While it’s the second-smallest set in the theme, it’s still pretty packed with fun and wackiness: it’s the LEGO Scooby-Doo Mystery Plane Adventures 75901 set!
75901 Mystery Plane Adventures was one of the two sets that we got our first look at when low-res photos leaked out from some of the European Winter Toy Fairs earlier this year. At a glance it didn’t look all that special–but seeing it in person and taking hi-res photos of the set, it’s really pretty cool for a $19.99 set!
Unlike some of the Scooby-Doo LEGO sets, Mystery Plane Adventures 75901 really is directly based off of a classic 1976 Scooby-Doo cartoon: “The Headless Horsemen of Halloween”. Now, some liberties have been taken with the colors/design for this set, but by and large it’s pretty clear that the inspiration for Mystery Plane Adventures is an actual episode from the first season of “The Scooby-Doo Show”. Thumbs up.
The set includes four figures: a Shaggy Rogers minifigure, an exclusive Scooby-Doo figure wearing flight goggles, a white horse figure and a LEGO Headless Horseman minifigure. The goggles Scooby-Doo figure is a minor variant that I don’t know if everyone is going to feel is necessary for their collections, nor is every collector going to feel that they need another generic Shaggy minifig.
However, what I think might be a must-have for many collectors is the Headless Horseman minifigure. This figure is wonderfully authentic to the Headless Horseman’s design from the “The Scooby-Doo Show”, with an accurate purple cape, blue torso and white horse. This very well may be the single coolest “monster” figure being released in the entire LEGO Scooby-Doo theme.
Of course, there’s also a “plane” included with Mystery Plane Adventures, and that’s not quite as episode-accurate. In the actual Scooby-Doo “The Headless Horseman of Halloween” episode, the plane Scooby and Shaggy end up in is almost totally white.
I think we can all agree, though, that an almost entirely white plane is a bit, well… plain. As such, LEGO opted to color the plane in the crazy neon green, teal and orange colors of the Mystery Machine. Some people will hate the inauthentic look of this plane, but I think the bizarre color scheme works fantastic. I love it. The plane also features a chain for Shaggy to hang off of for a fun action feature.
The 75901 LEGO Mystery Plane Adventures set is part of 2015 Scooby-Doo summer sets wave, which will be officially released in August 2015 (and unofficially released in select stores in mid-July 2015). With its low price and reasonably accurate representation of a vintage Scooby Doo episode, this set is on my (exceedingly large) summer “buy” list.
What are your thoughts on the Scooby-Doo Mystery Plane Adventures set, Scooby lovers? Is this classic-based set one that you’re interested in, or does the lack of a playset and unique “hero” minifigures deter you from picking up this set?
I may pick this up just to do a head to head review of it and the Character Building version.
I wonder if the Headless Horseman’s pumpkin can be removed to reveal the villain (i.e. they don’t use a generic black minifigure head or a pumpkin mold for the head).
