Over the last two weeks, I’ve gone back and redone my coverage of all of the LEGO Scooby-Doo sets that we only saw low-res, grainy images of when the sets leaked prior to the New York Toy Fair 2015. And today, I’m capping it all off with what is by far the largest, most elaborate and more expensive set in the theme: the LEGO Scooby-Doo Mystery Mansion 75904! It’s true that this set is required if you want a Velma minifigure to complete your Scooby-Doo Detective Agency, but this set has so, so much more to offer besides just Velma…
But then I actually got to check out the Scooby-Doo Mystery Mansion at the 2015 New York Toy Fair, and all my preconceptions faded away like ghosts: this set is absolutely awesome, and definitely the true centerpiece of the Scooby-Doo LEGO theme!
Of all the sets that I saw at the International Toy Fair, it turns out that I took more photos of this Mystery Mansion haunted castle than anything else at the show! I actually had to pare down from three dozen photos in order to find the ones I liked best for this article! (And keep in mind that you can enlarge any of the photos in this article to super-sized proportions!)
The amount of great “stuff” included with this playset–not just minifigures–is incredible!
The castle itself is a very impressive size when you see it in-person, as it literally towers over all of the other toys coming in the Summer 2015 LEGO Scooby-Doo sets wave. This is the sort of locale that the gang visited in numerous episodes of the Scooby-Doo cartoons, so it makes for a perfect setting for the whole Scooby-Doo Gang to hang out at (provided you buy Fred with the LEGO Mystery Machine Escape set–and let’s face it, we all will).
Sometimes the back of a playset is a big disappointment after checking out the frontal facade, but in this case, the back is positively filled with unique ideas!
Dracula’s coffin is hanging out at the top of the tower…
…while there’s a spiked ball booby-trap hanging out down below!
Meanwhile, there’s even a dilapidated old kitchen (complete with rat) where Scooby and Shaggy can make a sandwich, with a secret vault hidden upstairs!
While not technically a minifigure at all, an eighth character is included with the set–and it might be the coolest one of all: a brick-built Venus Flytrap monster! I never realized how much I needed a Venus Flytrap monster figure in my life until I saw this set on display. Fun!
Unfortunately, I somehow managed to take almost forty photos of this set, and yet only got one blurry photo of the haunted greenhouse. Disappointment! (Sorry!)
The set includes a theme-high total of seven minifigures (not counting the plant monster): the aforementioned exclusive Velma figure, as well as Shaggy, Scooby-Doo, Daphne (who is otherwise only available in the Haunted Lighthouse set), a Ghost, a Vampire and the Black Knight!
That’s a lot of uncommon and exclusive minifigures for one set!
Plus, you also get a psychedelic-colored motorcycle with sidecar for the Scooby-Doo Detective Agency to ride around in! Add in various handheld and environmental accessories such as keys, a magnifying glass, a camera, an owl, an axe, a sausage, skulls, pumpkins and a ball-and-chain, and you have a playset that is absolutely bursting with accessories and fun.
As of now, we still don’t know how many pieces the 75904 Mystery Mansion will contain. That said, from what I saw at the 2015 Toy Fair, the set is going to be well worth its $89.99 price-tag. And to be frank, I’m surprised LEGO isn’t charging us $100-$130 for such a beautifully-designed set, full of characters and great brick-built elements!
The Scooby-Doo LEGO Mystery Mansion set is scheduled to be officially released in August 2015, with early shipments of this set (and the rest of the Summer 2015 Scooby-Doo sets) arriving in late-July 2015 at LEGO Stores and Toys R Us locations.
What do you think of the Scooby-Doo Mystery Mansion, Scooby fans? Is this the best set in the whole Scooby-Doo theme, one that you’re purchasing solely to get the Velma figure, or a set that you’re planning to skip altogether?
