Last night I shined the spotlight on one of the two new tribes in LEGO Mixels Series 4: the Orbitronz. But unlike the space-themed Orbitronz Mixels, the other new-for-2015 LEGO Mixels tribe doesn’t need a spotlight shined on it–or any other kind of light, for that matter–because it generates its own! Coming in February 2015, it’s the first LEGO Mixels Tribe to feature glow-in-the-dark parts: the LEGO Mixels Glowies Tribe!
The LEGO Mixels Glowies sets will feature creatures that all have a color scheme of navy blue, black, white and uh, “glow-in-the-dark” (does that count as a color?).
My favorite of the Glowies, hands-down, is the 41534 LEGO Vampos Mixels figure. Vampos’ name comes from “Vampire” and (probably) the Latin word “os” (which means “mouth”), as the Vampos bat figure features enormous vampire fangs and no other discernible mouth. The glowing parts on Vampos appear to be on his toes, his eyes and the sides of his head.
The one big disappointment with the LEGO Vampos 41534 Mixel is that he only has micro ball-joints on his legs, while his wings are on a swivel joint. They would have been a lot more poseable with a micro-joint, but alas, Vampos is still adorable with just semi-poseable wings.
And from my favorite of the Glowies Mixels, let’s jump to my least-favorite: LEGO Boogly 41535. Boogly’s name, of course, comes from the words “Boo” (as in the expression used to scare people, as well as the ghost from Super Mario) and “Ugly” (as in–“man, that thing is ugly!“).
41535 LEGO Mixels Boogly has a really bizarre aesthetic to him that’s hard to pin down. He seems like a cross between a dog and a spider, but he actually reminds me more of the Metroid Prime that anything else (although my memories of the Metroid Prime may be a little hazy). The “knit cap” over his one eye is sort of cute, but otherwise this is one ugly dude. His toes and his eyeball seem to be this Glowies’ glowing parts.
Last but not least, we’ve got LEGO Mixels Globert 41533. LEGO Globert is another bat-creature, although he only has one eye compared to Vampos’ two. I actually think that both Vampos and Globert are winners in the cuteness department, although I favor Vampos just a hair more. Vampos’ glowing parts are his toes and his huge, singular eyeball. After looking at the illustration of Globert on the package, how could anyone not fall in love with him?
The LEGO Mixels Series 4 Glowies sets are scheduled to be released in February 2015, but I suspect that we’ll see them appear in stores long before then. Maybe not soon enough to be used as stocking stuffers this year, but hopefully by January 2015 at least. Keep your eyes on the Bricks and Bloks Facebook Page if you’re desperate for new Mixels–I’ll post an update as soon as they’re spotted in the wild.
How do you like the glowing Mixels Glowies Tribe, LEGO fans? Does the glow-in-the-dark gimmick appeal to you, or are glowing toys just not your thing?
