Despite not having any 2013 LEGO Minifigures Series 9 codes, I got pretty lucky with the first bunch of blind bags I purchased, as I got minifigures like the Cyclops I knew I’d adore, along with surprise hits like the Roller Derby Girl I didn’t expect to like at all but ended up loving. The last two minifigures I bought in my handful of LEGO Series 9 71000 packs were the Policeman and Battle Mech. Did I save the best Series 9 minifigures review for last?
The Battle Mech figure isn’t really what I picture in my mind when I hear the words “Battle Mech”. I don’t really understand what LEGO was going for with the Battle Mech minifigure, to be honest. When I saw photos of LEGO Minifigures Series 9 71000 for the first time, I seriously thought that the Battle Mech was some sort of motorcycle stunt driver or something. The robots and mechs in the 2013 Galaxy Squad theme are much better representations of what this minifigure is trying to be.
Even knowing what he is, he still doesn’t really ring true to me as a “Battle Mech” minifigure. For one thing, there’s nothing really “battle” about this figure–he doesn’t even come with a weapon! The Battle Mech has a helmet and a jetpack, but I don’t know how much battling he’s going to do with no offensive capabilities whatsoever. I’ve actually taken to giving the Battle Mech Series 9 minifigure weapons from other figures (such as Chima Crug’s blaster) in order to make him look more formidable.
Meanwhile, the Policeman minifigure is just sort of there. Considering the wild and crazy variety of LEGO Minifigures in series 1-8, it’s shocking that it has taken until now to get something as obvious as a Policeman, but this one is very plain. He doesn’t even have any printing on his back, so his belt only goes halfway around the figure. Lazy, LEGO!
It’s nice to have a cheap and easy to acquire Policeman, but there’s nothing about him that screams “excitement” to me. He’s fine for a generic cop, but there’s something here that makes me want to army-build him or anything.
I like the Policeman minifigure’s handcuffs a lot and the police badge is okay, but I feel like this figure is really missing something–namely, some means of enforcing the law! A badge and cuffs are nice all, but this poor Series 9 Policeman won’t get far beyond being a mall cop without having any weapons at all!
“Where Can I Buy It?!”
The LEGO Minifigures Series 9 71000 Policeman and Battle Mech minifigures are part of the first 2013 LEGO Series of minifigures. The wave hasn’t fully permeated most stores yet of writing, but both these minifigures are cheaply and easily acquired online.
Overall: The 2013 LEGO Minifigures Series 9 Policeman and Battle Mech minifigures strike me as being the most “average” of all the figures in the set. While there’s nothing especially terrible about either figure, neither of them feels really special or impressive either. The Policeman minifigure is wholly generic and unspectacular, whereas the Battle Mech just feels “off”‘to me. Both figures could really use a weapon or some other accessory to spice them up. The LEGO Series 9 Battle Mech and Policeman figures aren’t bad, but they’re the first 2013 minifigures I feel are merely average.
Mech is one of my favourites from this series!
