LEGO Legends of Chima has only been out for a little over two months now, but LEGO just keeps chugging away with retirements and new releases for the theme! A couple weeks ago LEGO announced the first four sets that would be discontinued from the theme, and now they’ve shipped out another Chima polybag set! This time it’s the LEGO Chima Razcal’s Double-Crosser 30254 polybag. If you don’t already have a Razcal minifigure, this polybag is a superb deal. If you do already have a Razcal, well… not so much…
With three polybag sets in three months, LEGO is doing a grand job of drawing in new collectors for their 2013 Legends of Chima theme. This is the way to hook kids and collectors–cheap minifigures with little vehicles for a low price to get new collections started. So far in the polybags (which have ranged in price from free to $3.99), we’ve had an Eagle Tribe minifigure (Ewar), a Wolf Tribe Minifigure (Winzar), and now a Raven Tribe minifigure (Razcal). Lots of diversity in the Legends of Chima polybags so far, and a masterful way of getting people to start collections of each tribe. I’d bet that a Lion Tribe polybag will be next.
Razcal of the Raven Tribe seems like an odd choice for this LEGO Chima polybag set, as he’s also the figure that comes with the cheapest mass-release Chima set–Razcal’s Glider 70000. That said, I’m thrilled to get a Razcal figure in this set for $3.79 instead of having to purchase the underwhelming 70000 Razcal’s Glider set for triple the price ($11.99).
The Razcal minifigure is pretty basic–he’s a Raven Tribe minifigure that doesn’t really have any traits that set him apart from his Raven Tribe comrades. His natural facial expression print looks scheming and diabolical, but I’m a bigger fan of his reversed head print, which shows him looking positively terrified. The reversed head reminds me of a panicked Shaggy from Scooby-Doo fame. Razcal is rather generic-looking as far as Raven Tribe members go, but I’m more than happy to have him for under four bucks.
Considering that a LEGO Minifigure costs about $3 as a blind bag, that means that Razcal’s Double-Crosser vehicle is basically an 80 cent add-on in this $3.79 polybag set. That’s quite a deal, and it’s a cute little vehicle to have. I like the idea of the Raven Tribe having at least one land vehicle for quick missions, and I continue to adore the way that LEGO has designed the vehicles to resemble the tribe they belong to.
Once again, LEGO has released yet another Legends of Chima set with a minifigure with no weapons whatsoever! With no offensive capabilities of any kind either handheld or on his ATV Vehicle, Razcal seems like a sitting duck (or raven, I suppose) for the Eagle Tribe or any other tribe. It makes zero sense for polybag sets that contain warriors to keep coming without any kind of weapons of any kind, and it needs to stop.
In addition, the value of this set really hinges upon whether or not you already have a Razcal minifigure. The Double-Crosser build itself is cute enough, but it’s nothing I’d pay $3.79 for. As a bonus I like the Double-Crosser, but it is a very basic and inessential vehicle–definitely not worth any more than $1 to me.
Overall: As a vehicle, Razcal’s Double-Crosser is pretty “Ehn”. If you already have a Razcal minifigure from the Razcal’s Glider set, I really don’t see any reason to buy this LEGO Chima polybag set–at all. On the other hand, if you passed on that set and want a Razcal figure for the cheapest price possible, this set can’t be beat. As a figure pack with a little ATV as an accessory, the LEGO Legends of Chima Razcal’s Double-Crosser 30254 set is okay for under $4. But if you don’t need the Razcal minifigure, it’s a definite pass.
Thanks for the review. I was looking at the Razcal’s Glider set the other day but passed cause there are other sets I wanted. Now to see if the nearest wal-mart actually has the polybags.
Any idea on when and where the Iron Man polybag will be available?
No word on the Iron Man polybag yet for America, but I wouldn’t be the slightest bit surprised to see it as a LEGO Store April 2013 freebie with a qualifying purchase.
Somebody posted the April Lego calendar. The April free with purchase gift is a Master Splinter Key chain.
