I’ll come back and take a look at the LEGO Legends of Chima 2014 Legend Beasts and Speedorz later on, but today I’m covering the last of the regular LEGO Chima 2014 winter sets–which, coincidentally, is the first major set representing the new Chima Bat Tribe! Heading into stores in just a few weeks, it’s the LEGO Legends of Chima Braptor’s Wing Striker 70128 set!
Just when I was starting to think I’d still be talking about the January 2014 LEGO Legends of Chima winter sets when the new year rolled in, I’ve finally come to the last of the main-line 2014 LEGO Chima sets.
While I really, really hate spiders (as you may have surmised if you read yesterday’s preview of the LEGO Sparratus Spider Stalker), I’m pretty ambivalent toward bats. I wouldn’t want to meet one (and I’d prefer to never see another Zubat again), but I otherwise don’t mind them. So a Chima Bat Tribe…? Fine by me.
Although it’s the smallest and cheapest of the winter 2014 LEGO Legends of Chima sets coming out in January, I actually really like the aesthetic of the 70128 LEGO Braptor’s Wing Striker. The sleek black with purple and green as secondary colors is a very striking (no pun intended) combination, and makes this one of the best-looking Chima sets from this whole winter wave.
The minifigures are actually less enticing than the vehicle for me, this time around–I already have the Eagle Tribe LEGO Eris minifigure (several times over), while the exclusive Bat Tribe Braptor minifigure looks sort of doofy and not at all as slick as his vehicle. This is a rare LEGO Legends of Chima set that I’m picking up more for the vehicle than for the minifigures–that’s definitely a switch!
The LEGO 70128 Braptor’s Wing Striker vehicle has an action feature built into it where its front wings can shoot forward to entangle an enemy minifigure (or I guess your finger or what-not). This seemed a bit questionable to me, and my wife the Biology teacher confirmed for me that bats don’t really work that way. But hey–this is a crazy brick-built flying bat mount from a fantasy world of anthropomorphic animal tribes, so I’m just gonna roll with it.
The LEGO Legends of Chima Braptor’s Wing Striker 70128 set should be released in most stores by early January 2014, and it’s a small set that should have a price-point of $10-$12. I’ll post an update when the official pieces count and price for this set is revealed, and you can ‘Like’ Bricks and Bloks on Facebook to have LEGO news and updates sent straight to your Facebook Newsfeed.
Wings that snap forward to grab things has been used before in Lego, so that part is cool, but is necessitates that the wing pieces be mounted in a way that looks backwards for an aircraft that wants to look like a bat. Oh well.
Actually some bats do use their wings (and tails) to catch prey. http://labspace.open.ac.uk/file.php/7268/s182_2_005i.jpg
