We’re still a couple days away from the 2013 Toy Fair in New York City, but more photos of spring and summer 2013 LEGO sets leak out daily. Today all three sets that make up the LEGO Iron Man 3 movie theme have manifested, spoiling LEGO’s surprise for the show (but making a lot of LEGO fans happy a few days early). I’ll discuss all three LEGO Marvel Superheroes 2013 Iron Man 3 sets, and so as to save the best for last, I’ll start with the worst for first: the LEGO Iron Man vs. The Mandarin Ultimate Showdown 76008…
LEGO Iron Man vs. The Mandarin: Ultimate Showdown 76008 is the value-priced “battle pack” set of the Iron Man 3 theme. For a low price-point of $12.99, you get minifigures of both Iron Man in his Mark XLII armor and The Mandarin (the main villain of the Iron Man 3 movie). The Mandarin is otherwise only available in the $39.99 LEGO Iron Man Malibu Mansion Attack 76007 set, so this is easily the most economical way to get a minifigure of the evil supervillain.
Apart from the Iron Man Mark XLII minifigure and the Mandarin minifigure, this set also includes a, uhh… funny-looking, heavily-armed buggy? If ever there was a LEGO set that suffers from hyperbole, it’s this one. I mean, really? The “Ultimate Showdown” is Iron Man vs. a little car that shoots missiles? Uh, no. Just no, LEGO.
Personally, I’ll be passing on this set entirely in favor of the Iron Man 3 Malibu Mansion Attack set–while more expensive, that set includes a must-have Pepper Potts minifigure and a Tony Stark minifigure, both of which I feel my LEGO Iron Man 3 collection would be incomplete without. But if you’re only interested in getting the cheapest LEGO Mandarin and Iron Man minifigures available, then this is the set for you.
The LEGO Iron Man vs. The Mandarin: Ultimate Showdown 76008 set has a suggested retail price of $12.99 and may be available as early as March 15, 2013.
