I run a LEGO news blog, so it pretty much blows my mind and drops my jaw when I walk into a local store and see a LEGO set sitting on the shelf that I know absolutely nothing about. This isn’t the kind of thing that occurs every day–in fact, it doesn’t even happen every year–but it did happen when I was at my local Target yesterday! Even crazier, it’s a set that was supposedly released last year. Coming back to a Target store near you–the LEGO Holiday Train 40034 polybag set!
Like I said, it’s not very often that LEGO manages to sneak a set past production and onto store shelves without my being aware. But when it does happen, it’s usually a store exclusive polybag set, as is the case with this latest seasonal polybag. This set was first released in 2012, but I never saw it at any of my local stores (although I also didn’t know it existed at the time, so I was wasn’t looking either). Thus, I’m psyched to have a second chance to add this to my collection (which I now have!).
My local Boston, MA Target store hasn’t set up their Christmas aisle yet (a whole week after Halloween! Crazy, right?!), so I didn’t bother venturing into the seasonal section at the store yesterday when grocery shopping. However, I went to checkout and found an endcap of the LEGO 40034 Holiday Train polybags sitting right up at the checkout lane! After snapping a couple photos, I grabbed a polybag for myself and checked out. I’ll post a full review and photos of the Holiday Train LEGO set polybag soon, but I can already tell I’ll going to love this one (I’m a LEGO Christmas set nut).
I do want to point out that this Holiday Train LEGO 40034 polybag is an exceptional deal. I consider any set where it averages out to ten cents per piece to be a good value, but at 82 pieces for $4.99, the 40034 LEGO Holiday Train averages out to an amazing six cents per piece! Even if the pieces are small–what a deal!
How do you like the LEGO Holiday Train 40034 seasonal polybag set, LEGO fans? Does this little LEGO train have a spot with your holiday decorations, or are you unimpressed with this festive form of LEGO transportation?
This was available in brand stores last year (I saw it in the Burlington MA store regularly at the time), but I’m glad to see it available again – I’ll probably pick one up for my train-obsessed younger son who often misses out on playing with my older son’s Lego sets.
Didn’t realize you were based in Boston. No wonder I like this site so much 🙂
We moved to Boston last year–the huge amount of local LEGO Stores was the best part about moving to this area! 😉
That was released last year. Any chance it was just leftover in their backroom from last year’s holiday stuff?
I don’t think so–they had a ton of them on the shelf. I wonder if Target ordered a second run of these because they did so well last year?
They had these at the Lego store in Austin when I was there last week. I love the Xmas sets but I’m disappointed that the 2 sets they brought out so far (train and santa sleigh with reindeer) are repeats this year. I hope they bring something new…
FWIW, I think last year it was a brand-store exclusive.
Yeah, we do well in Boston – four brand-stores close by and a Legoland Discovery Center opening in Somerville next May 🙂
These little Christmas sets are kind of neat.
