If there’s one thing that LEGO fans will never, never get tired of, it’s LEGO trains sets! LEGO could probably just produced a slightly-tweaked and only somewhat-new LEGO train set every year for the rest of time and the LEGO train sets would still sell like wildfire, so it’s no surprise that LEGO is capitalizing on demand for new trains with the all-new LEGO City High-Speed Passenger Train 60051 set this summer 2014! The set isn’t cheap (that’s for sure!), but it sure does look like fun…
It’s tough to describe a train set, as whatever words I use can’t adequately describe what you see in the photos. Let me just say that I very much appreciate the sleek design of the High Speed Passenger Train LEGO 2014 set, and think that the white and grey color scheme looks fantastic on it.
The three LEGO minifigures included with the set (LEGO Train Driver/Conductor minifigure, Cyclist minifigure, and traveler minifigure) are all pretty bland, but this isn’t the sort of set you buy for the LEGO minifigs–you buy it for the super-cool LEGO train itself.
The train features an opening front (to put the Train Driver inside, obviously), as well as opening doors on the side cars allowing you to put in passengers (and bikes, if you like!) and play with the tables and seats on the interior of the train.
Ordinarily I would complain up-and-down about a LEGO set containing 610 pieces costing $149.99, but the train LEGO sets are one of the only exceptions to my target of “10 cents per piece” as being the ideal value for LEGO sets. Given the fancy Power Functions of the LEGO 60051 High-Speed Passenger Train set and the impressive 7-speed, 8-channel infrared remote, it’d be unrealistic to not expect a fairly intimidating price-point.
I’m still not thrilled with the price–and I’ll be waiting for a sale for this set–but I do understand it.
The 60051 LEGO High-Speed Passenger Train is part of the LEGO City Summer 2014 sets wave, and is scheduled to be released in May/June 2014. LEGO train sets are always ridiculously popular, so this particular set may be a mite hard-to-get once it’s released. I’ll post an update to the Bricks and Bloks Facebook page once the LEGO City High Speed Passenger Train shows up in stores, so keep your eyes peeled if you want to add this mighty fine (and mighty expensive) train set to your LEGO City this summer.
Thoughts on the LEGO City 60051 High-Speed Passenger Train, LEGO fans? Despite the high price-tag, will you be buying this latest LEGO train set for your collection?
There needs to be a modification in order for the train to work properly while turning. Also there are no doors, not even for looks so I think that your review is not entirely true. The only supposed “doors” are not even doors but roof pannels that come off. Not hating just stating facts
I agree it is sad that there are no real doors. Also wish Lego still printed Legos instead of giving the consumer a sticker sheet, I know they do it to save money but I don’t feel the savings being passed along to me. We set-up this week and my sticker sheet had scratches on it new from the box, had to call Lego. Also my kids have noticed the train does derail easily. What modifications need to be made?
my 5 year old spent half of christmas day putting this together and
was disoppointed it didnt run well. there seems to be too little friction between the wheels and the track and the wheels spin a lot. im going to sandpaper the track a little to see if that works
