With so many immensely popular licensed LEGO themes around this year, it’s easy to let some of the smaller, original themes fall through the cracks. But though it doesn’t have a juggernaut franchise behind it, the LEGO 2013 Galaxy Squad theme has some amazingly cool and unique designs capable of catching anyone’s attention. I love the Galaxy Squad’s fusion of science fiction technology and insectoid aliens, and am definitely looking forward to the four LEGO Galaxy Squad Summer 2013 sets that have just been fully revealed…
First up, we have the Galaxy Squad orange team, who are bringing their Galaxy Squad CLS-89 Eradicator mech onto the battlefield! While we’ve definitely seen bigger LEGO mechs before (particularly in the LEGO Ninjago theme), I really like the aesthetic of this CLS-89 Eradicator mech. I love the technic bricks being used as cannons on the arms, and I think having different colors for the cannons on the two arms was a great choice.
You get a Jack Fireblade minifigure and a minifigure of his orange robot sidekick, but no alien minifigures with this set (although there are obviously a couple of brick-built aliens). I actually think it adds some extra diversity to the alien menace to get more brick-built insect creatures who won’t be as hopelessly outmatched against the Galaxy Squad. The Galaxy Squad CLS-89 Eradicator Mech 70707 will contain 440 pieces and retail for $39.99.
Next up we have the Galaxy Squad Crater Creeper 70706. It’s the cheapest and smallest of the Summer 2013 LEGO Galaxy Squad sets, so as you might expect, it’s also the least impressive. The ant-like insect robot looks awfully fragile on those thin little legs! One or two good shots from the Galaxy Squad and this poor alien beastie will probably be permanently immobilized!
You get a Galaxy Squad green team Chuck Stonebreaker minifigure and an Alien Buggoid minifigure with this set, as well as some sort of hover-chair. To be honest, I’m not certain that the Crater Creeper will be able to do anything about it if Chuck Stonebreaker just hovers above it and blows it away with flickfire missiles! The LEGO Galaxy Squad Crater Creeper will be $19.99 for 171 pieces.
I’m pretty sure I’m going to have nightmares about the LEGO Galaxy Squad Hive Crawler 70708 for the rest of my life. The Galaxy Squad red team seriously has their work cut out for them when they take on this massive insectoid monster. The insect robot in this set is, quite frankly, terrifying. Aside from the fact that it’s huge and imposing, the insect robot can drop eggs that hatch dragonfly bug aliens. Sound horrifying? It is.
The Billy Starbeam minifigure and his red robot sidekick minifigure are going to have to somehow take on this menace armed only with a speeder bike and some handheld weapons. Good luck, guys! The 707078 LEGO Galaxy Squad Hive Crawler will retail for $49.99 and contain 560 pieces.
And speaking of mismatches, that brings us to the last and most gigantic Galaxy Squad set of them all–the Galaxy Squad Galactic Titan 70709! The Galactic Titan recon vehicle splits into a tank and a flying gunship, and is quite frankly going to obliterate the poor buggoid creatures and their outpost that are opposing it.
As cool as the Titan itself is, I think my favorite part of the set is the insect robot centipede. It’s creepy, but man is it also cool! The set includes a Solomon Blaze minifigure, another Blue Team member, a blue robot sidekick, a dragonfly bug alien, and two Alien Buggoid minifigures. All this coolness will come at heavy cost, though–$99.99 for the 1,012 included pieces.
These four Galaxy Squad sets comprise the LEGO Galaxy Squad Summer 2013 series of sets, and should hit stores in July 2013. Most of the LEGO Galaxy Squad sets are currently available for purchase online at a good discount.
