LEGO announced ages ago that the fan-created LEGO Exo-Suit would be coming to the LEGO Ideas set range (though back then, we still old-timers still called it “LEGO CUUSOO”). The rumored release date for the set was August 2014, but once the calendar flipped over to July 2014 without a peep from LEGO, I got a little worried that the project’s release was going to be delayed. Thankfully, it turns out that that’s not the case at all–to celebrate the 4th of July, LEGO officially unveiled their LEGO Exo-Suit 21109 set… in spectacular, animated video form!

UPDATE 8/1/2014: The LEGO Exo-Suit set is now up for order and selling out FAST! There’s only one production run for this set, so make sure to order it ASAP if you want one. Like the LEGO Mars Curiosity Rover, this set will sell out fast!

When I first heard about LEGO CUUSOO Exo-Suit set that Peter Reid designed, I wasn’t immediately mesmerized by the set’s potential. We’d seen original LEGO Exo Suits released in past sets, and I didn’t have any particular attachment to the idea of a new one with classic LEGO Space minifigures.

But then LEGO just had to go and create this CGI video storyline promoting the LEGO Ideas Exo-Suit 21109 and making me get emotionally invested in the characters. Darn it, LEGO!

As you can see in the video, the LEGO 21109 Exo-Suit has definitely evolved a bit since the original fan model that Peter Raid designed and submitted to LEGO CUUSOO. Sometimes LEGO gets it wrong when they adapt a set for LEGO Ideas/LEGO CUUSOO, but I actually think they’ve made the 21109 LEGO Exo-Suit set look just a little bit better!

The big allure of this Exo-Suit LEGO Ideas #007 set for many fans isn’t even going to be the LEGO Exo Suit itself–it’s going to be the pair of LEGO minifigures included with the LEGO 21109 set. Not only will the male and female LEGO Space minifigures have the classic yellow heads and hands, but they will also be coming in green–the first time that LEGO has ever released a green LEGO Space Man minifigure and a green LEGO Space Woman minifigure!

I never thought we’d see the day that we’d get a new color for the classic LEGO Space minifigures!

The LEGO Ideas Exo-Suit 21109 set is now available for order, but is selling out very quickly. This set is a LEGO Store exclusive and is not expected to be available anywhere else. The set will include 321 pieces and carry a retail price of $34.99, so it falls just over my ideal LEGO price-point of ten cents per piece (although I’ll forgive LEGO since this set does feature ball-joints).
