It’s been a pretty slow news month thus far, but it turns out that it was just the calm before the storm! Rather than allowing us all to fall into complacency, LEGO has now dropped a cubic mother-lode of news on us, with all of the just-announced LEGO Dimensions sets (including the Starter Pack, Team Sets, Hero Packs, Level Pack and Fun Packs)! But of the sixteen sets announced, there’s no question which is the most exciting and will be the hot one of the first wave–and now you can reserve it: the LEGO Wizard of Oz Fun Pack with Wicked Witch minifigure is now up for order!
But wait–! It turns out that there is hope after all, as the Wizard of Oz license has now been secured, and the first-ever LEGO Wizard of Oz set has now been revealed! The 71221 LEGO Dimensions Wizard of Oz Fun Pack set will include both a Wicked Witch minifigure and a totally unexpected brick-built Winged Monkey figure!
I’m kind of bummed that the Winged Monkey doesn’t have an actual face, per se, but I imagine I can wrangle up some spare Chima heads that might be perfect for Winged Monkeys! Meanwhile, the LEGO Wicked Witch is unquestionably the most popular character from the franchise, and the right choice to begin this not-quite-theme with.
As LEGO had to pay for the Wizard of Oz license and in-game screenshots of the Yellow Brick Road have already been seen, I think it’s a safe bet that we’ll be seeing Dorothy, Scarecrow, the Cowardly Lion and the Tin Man in LEGO form at some point over the next year! Finally, the most famous brick road in history will have some representation in brick-built form!
The LEGO Wizard of Oz Fun Pack 72221 set is now available for order, and is scheduled to be released on September 27, 2015. This will almost definitely be the hottest-selling set from the first series of LEGO Dimensions toys, and I do expect it to also be the first one to sell out. I went ahead and reserved my Wicked Witch set (and a few other expansion packs), just in case!
Now that you’ve seen the contents of this set, what do you think LEGO fans? Will you be starting your own Wizard of Oz LEGO collection with the Wicked Witch and Winged Monkey this fall, or is this quasi-theme a no-buy for you unless actual playsets are announced to coincide with the minifigure?
