My wife bought me the LEGO Legends of Chima Winzar’s Pack Patrol 30251 polybag set last night, and thanks to the fact that the set is only 38 pieces, I’ve already got it built and photographed for the full review! Is this LEGO Chima polybag worth your four dollars?
I like that LEGO is churning out polybag sets aggressively for their new LEGO Legends of Chima theme here in the early-going, both with this set and the free Ewar’s Acro Fighter polybag set they gave out in January. LEGO Chima is a young and fresh theme, and promoting it with cheap polybag sets that parents will pick up without a thought for their kids is a great marketing tactic.
As you can pick up this LEGO Chima 30251 Winzar’s Pack Patrol set for under four dollars, that makes this wolf tribe Winzar minifigure the cheapest Chima figure available thus far.
I didn’t particularly like the other two sets that the Winzar figure was available in (LEGO Legends of Chima Wakz’ Pack Tracker 70004 and Speedorz Ice Tower 70106), so I was glad to add him to my collection for just a few bucks without having to buy one of the larger sets.
The Winzar minifigure itself looks pretty fierce, with a complex frontal print that makes him look strong and deadly. His back is pretty simple, though his musculature is at least printed on. Like all LEGO Legends of Chima minifigures, he has a removable “wolf” head piece, as well as having a double-sided regular head. Both sides of his head look rather angry, but I think I prefer the more vicious face on Winzar.
The Swamp Ski vehicle that Winzar comes with is about as simple as can be–it took me maybe two minutes to assemble it. I like that the swamp skimmer can balance on its front skis so that it can do tricks and so forth, and I think that adding a water vehicle to the Chima Wolf Tribe gives them a little more depth, as the early sets make them seem like primarily a land-based group.
I know that this is a cheap polybag set, but would it have killed LEGO to give us a weapon of some sort for Winzar? Much like poor Lennox in the Lennox’ Lion Attack 70002 set, Winzar is completely unarmed and seemingly has no way to defend himself. The swamp ski vehicle has razor blades on the back of it, but unless Winzar is planning to charge at the enemy animal tribe minifigures in reverse, I don’t see what use that’s going to be. I strongly dislike this trend of LEGO not giving weapons to driver minifigures–for a combat-based theme like Legends of Chima, it just doesn’t make any sense.
“Where Can I Buy It?!”
The LEGO Chima Winzar’s Pack Patrol 30251 polybag is a Target store exclusive in the United States, and can be found temporarily in their 2013 Valentine’s Day seasonal section. If you don’t have a local Target, the Winzar’s Pack Patrol set is also available online.
Overall: Look, I know there’s only so hard you can be on a little three-dollar LEGO set, but this one just doesn’t do it for me. The Winzar minifigure is already available in two other sets, and I hate that he doesn’t come with any kind of handheld weapon of any kind. I like that LEGO is giving collectors (and kids!) a low-priced polybag set to help boost armies of minifigures and hopefully create some new LEGO Legends of Chima fans, but this LEGO Chima Winzar’s Pack Patrol 30251 Polybag is really unexceptional. The set is good if you want Winzar but don’t want to buy any of the other sets he’s in, but otherwise I don’t see much point to picking up this polybag.
