I’veĀ been talking about (and loving) the LEGO Legends of Chima theme since months before the first sets were released in January 2013, so it feels sort of weird knowing that this is the last time that I’ll ever talk about an upcoming Chima set again (barring some unforeseen miracle resurrection for theme). I previously discussed the other two Summer 2015 Chima sets that I saw at the New York Toy Fair 2015, and now it’s time to move on to the last of the trio (and Chima itself): the LEGO Chima Mammoth’s Frozen Stronghold 70226 set!
Like most of the mid-priced Chima “fortress”/”base” sets, there’s not a whole lot to the Mammoth’s Frozen Stronghold 70226. There’s basically just an archway with an awesome brick-built mammoth elephant head with poseable trunk above it, along with a disc shooter and an icy prison off to the side.
I thought this set looked really small for a “stronghold” when I saw it in-person, but it actually contains over 600 pieces. It sure doesn’t look it, though, does it? I’m guessing that a lot of pieces are used in the construction of the two brick-built mini vehicles included with the set. The three-wheeled flaming Rhino Tribe vehicle is cute and all, but I sort of wish they’d devoted those bricks to the Mammoth’s Stronghold itself instead.
The main gimmick of the set is a small Mammtoh Tribe vehicle that can be launched out of the Stronghold. It’s got tusks on its front end and flickfire missiles, though the white wheels look a tad plain. Again–I’d have rather forgone this mini-rig and had a bigger playset, but that’s just me.
There are a whopping zero–yes, zero–unique or exclusive characters included in the Mammoth Stronghold set. Typically we get at least one new character with a set this expensive, but not this time. The closest thing to a true exclusive with this set is the Fire Wing Rogon minifigure, which I imagine not too many fans have been pining away for.
In total, the set includes five minifigures: Rogon (Fire Wings), Rinona, Maula, Mottrot and Vardy. I think I would have preferred just about any other figure to yet another Vardy minifigure,
The Mammoth’s Frozen Stronghold Chima set will contain 621 pieces and retail for $59.99. That’s just under 10 cents per piece, so this set scores strongly on my price-per-piece value-meter.
The LEGO 70226 Mammoth’s Frozen Stronghold set is part of the final wave of Legends of Chima sets, which are scheduled for release in August 2015 (and yes, that means they should turn up at Toys R Us and LEGO Stores in late July 2015).
What do you think about the 70226 Mammoth’s Frozen Stronghold–and the end of the LEGO Chima line as a whole–Chima fans? Are you satisfied with the final trio of Chima sets that are scheduled for released in Summer 2015, or were you hoping for a different or grander note for the theme to go out on?
