Last year, Toys R Us started what I hoped was going to be a new tradition when they debuted the amazingly cool 2014 Bricktober Mini Modular Buildings as their weekly October holiday giveaway sets! From the Pizza Place to the Town Hall, last year’s October exclusive sets really broke the mold for what we could hope for for free promo sets. And today, it’s been revealed that the series is continuing–the 2015 LEGO Bricktober sets include a Bakery, Hotel, Train Station… and a brick-built Toys R Us store!!
And while I was none too thrilled with having to make a bunch of pricey purchases at Toys R Us last year to snag the Bricktober 2014 sets, I’m so psyched about this year’s sets that I have no doubt that I’ll be doing so again!
40144 Bricktober Toys R Us Store Set (Bricktober 2015 Week 4)
Based on the numbering of the sets, we can make a pretty accurate guess as to which set will be available during which week of the October promotion. But rather than start by discussing the set that will be released first, let’s chat first about the set that I like best, which is definitely the LEGO Bricktober Toys R Us Store 40144!
I spend a lot of time in Toys R Us stores, so the familiar sight of a local TRU store captured in brick form gives a certain warmness to my heart.
The mini Toys R Us truck that comes with the set is simply adorable! At first I thought that the backwards ‘R’ on the side of the truck was printed on, but when you look at it close-up, it’s clear that it’s just a stick. Oh well–even with a decal, I still love it!
The Toys R Us store itself is also remarkably accurate–on a basic level–to what the exterior of most TRU stores look like! I’m not sure what that bizarre clear triangle on the left side of the building is supposed to be (anyone?), but I love the welcoming yellow archway, street light and clear/red doors of the building. The Toys R Us logo on the sign is also a sticker, unfortunately.
This set should be available during the final week of Bricktober (week four), so mark your calendar and don’t forget it if you want this one!
40141 Bricktober Hotel (Bricktober 2015 Week 1)
While it doesn’t capture my heart in quite the same manner as the Toys R Us store does, the first week’s promo set–the LEGO Bricktober Hotel 40141–looks downright spectacular! The micro airplane isa bit silly-looking, but all of the translucent blue window pieces, the little flowers outside, pillars, and Unikitty horn bushes are just so sweet! I love this set, and hope someday we get a full Hotel Modular Building in this style!
40142 Bricktober Train Station Set (Bricktober 2015 Week 2)
For week two, we’ve got the Bricktober Train Station 40142. This one is a little, well… basic… compared to the rest. It’s still cute and all, and I like the awning to cover the nonexistence waiting passengers, but this is the weakest of a very strong batch of mini modular buildings.
40143 Bricktober Bakery Set (Bricktober 2015 Week 3)
Finally, we have the LEGO Bricktober Bakery 40143 coming during the third week of the promotion! The colors of this 40143 Bakery actually remind me a lot of this year’s Detective’s Office set, but with the added charms of a croissant being used as a building sign, little cupakes as columns to either side of the entrance, and an umbrella parasol out front.
This set has got nothing on the Parisian Restaurant Modular Building released at the start of 2014, but it’s also free (whereas that set cost 150 bucks). I would place this set third of four in my rankings of this year’s Bricktober promo sets, but it is still a very solid entry in the lineup.
What do you think of the 2015 LEGO Bricktober exclusive sets, brick fans? Will you be dropping by Toys R Us on a weekly basis to try to snag these sets for free with a qualifying purchase, rolling the dice and hoping the sets last long enough to be for sale individually after the sale, or skipping out on this year’s impressive exclusive Bricktober sets altogether?
maybe a trash can?
