Along with the exclusive LEGO Super Heroes minifigures and the LEGO The Hobbit/LEGO Star Wars San Diego Comic Con 2013 exclusive sets, there was another very high-profile item being sold at the LEGO Booth in San Diego this week. For the first time ever, the LEGO Back to the Future Time Machine was put up for sale, with collectors and resellers scrambling to buy up all the LEGO Deloreans. In fact, the LEGO BTTF set is now selling for a ridiculous, inflated $100+ on ebay. I am here to beg you, to plead with you: Please, do not waste your money paying scalpers for the LEGO Back to the Future Time Machine set right now!
I was pretty stunned when I saw the large sums of money that folks were paying for the LEGO 21103 Back to the Future CUUSOO set on the aftermarket, but then I realized that I run a LEGO site and not everyone is as informed (or is it obsessed?) as I am.
I think a lot of casual LEGO fans and collectors who don’t keep up-to-date on their LEGO news are purchasing the LEGO Delorean 21103 under the false assumption that the set is a San Diego Comic Con 2013 exclusive. I can see where fans at the con might see a previously unshown (at least in the United States) LEGO set being sold at San Diego Comic Con and think that the set isn’t going to be available outside of the show.
So let me just make sure that this is totally clear: The 21103 LEGO Back to Future Time Machine Delorean set is not an exclusive to SDCC 2013 or any other event. There is no pressing need to get the LEGO Delorean from a San Diego Comic Con reseller, because it will be sold both in the United States and in other countries–not just as this convention.
The LEGO Back to the Future Time Machine set will be available to everyone in August 2013 (specifically August 1st), and will sell for $34.99 both at official LEGO Stores and through the online LEGO Shop at Home site. Even if the stores do sell out of the first batch, the set will be in print for a while and will end up being very easy to obtain, just like the original LEGO Minecraft set released in 2012. So please, please don’t feed the scalpers for this set. Save your money and the OUTATIME goodness will be yours for the regular retail cost in just a few short weeks.
UPDATE: LEGO has now confirmed on the official LEGO Shop online that the DeLorean Time Machine LEGO set will be available in the United States on August 1st, 2013. You can check out the official listing on the site now, and head back to order the set in less than two weeks from today!
