Just when I think the news coming out from LEGO can’t get any bigger, something even crazier happens! First LEGO revealed the enormous (just released) LEGO Tower of Orthanc. Then LEGO stunned Star Wars fans with the LEGO Star Wars Ewok Village, and followed it up with the reveal of the incredible Sydney Opera House. But now the first photos have leaked out of a set that, while not as large as the other recently announced sets, may be the biggest bombshell and most anticipated of them all: it’s the LEGO Back to the Future Delorean car set, and it’s coming in July 2013!
Although it wasn’t on the July flyers being given out at the LEGO Stores at the start of June, apparently LEGO has released a different version of the July 2013 LEGO Store Calendar in the UK that now shows the first photo of the upcoming CUUSOO LEGO Back to the Future Delorean Time Machine car set! This Newsletter was found and scanned by the UK BrickFanatics website. The LEGO Back to the Future Time Machine 21103 set was the 6th set to reach 10,000 supporters on the CUUSOO website and earn a chance for consideration by The LEGO Group–which decided to make the set a reality in summer 2013!
The set has undergone a massive overhaul and some substantial changes compared to the original model submitted by Masashi to LEGO CUUSOO in 2011. The 21103 LEGO Delorean Time Machine certainly looks more detailed now, but I’m not altogether convinced that the changes LEGO made to the original submission are a true improvement. However, I’m going to try to stay positive about this model until we see more photos of the set.
Very suspicious by their absence in this prototype photo of the LEGO Delorean posted on BrickFanatics are any minifigures. While the original set submitted a Doc Brown minifigure and a Marty McFly minifigure, LEGO has neither confirmed nor denied if their Back to the Future LEGO Delorean set would come with any minifigures.
Diamond Select Toys released Back to the Future Minimates figures of Doc Brown and Marty McFly a few years ago, so LEGO Back to the Future minifigures should definitely be possible as well. LEGO and Diamond Select Toys Minimates are different license contracts, so the existence of Back to the Future Minimates shouldn’t stop LEGO from making Back to the Future minifigures. Theoretically minifigures of Doc Brown and Marty McFly should be possible–we just haven’t heard yet whether or not there actually will be.
According to this new edition of the LEGO Store Calendar, the LEGO 21103 Back to the Future Delorean Time Machine set will be available on July 18, 2013. It’s not known if that date is only for Europe or if the set will be available in the United States as well on July 18th, however. I’ll update with more photos and specific information set on the as LEGO releases details–which would have to be pretty soon, as the Back to the Future LEGO set seems to be coming out in under a month!
