LEGO Star Wars fans have been patiently waiting half a year for more LEGO Star Wars sets to arrive, and the time is nearly upon us! From the new LEGO Jabba’s Sail Barge to the updated LEGO Republic Gunship, there’s a slew of new Summer 2013 LEGO Star Wars sets on the way, and we’ve written complete articles and posted photo previews from the 2013 Toy Fair for every single one of them. As we’ve only got another month or so until the summer wave arrives, I figured now would be a good time to combine all the 2013 LEGO Star Wars summer sets news in one easy-to-find place. Read on for the full LEGO Star Wars Summer 2013 set list and links to our comprehensive previews for each and every major LEGO Star Wars set…
Below are the official set photos and my extremely concise thoughts on each of the ten new LEGO Star Wars sets coming out in June or July 2013. You can check out the full articles and galleries of photos taken at New York Toy Fair 2013 for each 2013 LEGO Star Wars summer set by clicking the hyperlink under the photo of each set.
LEGO Star Wars Corporate Alliance Tank Droid 75015
Jango Fett minifigure? Hot. The rest of this set: Not so hot. LEGO has sort of been a victim of the sale of Lucasfilm and Star Wars to Disney, as Disney immediately cancelled the 3-D version of “Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones” that LEGO was basing the bulk of their Summer 2013 sets around. As a result, we get sets like this one that feature a vehicle/droid that’s pretty irrelevant outside of Attack of the Clones, and which no one was really asking for. This might sell okay because it’s cheap and includes a LEGO Jango Fett minifigure, but I have to admit I’m a little dubious of this set.
LEGO Star Wars Homing Spider Droid 75016
This is a second set that’s going to have a rough time at retail. The Spider Droid didn’t set the world aflame with its success as a retailer exclusive a few years ago, and now it’s back as a mass-release item without any movie or multimedia to support it. With minor Jedi Stass Allie as the set’s headliner minifigure, this set could really stink up store shelves. Maybe I’m wrong, but this set really reeks of “dud” to me sales-wise.
LEGO Star Wars Duel on Geonosis 71507
I’m a bigger fan of “Attack of the Clones” than most, and I actually do really like the showdown between Yoda and Count Dooku. But… a whole set devoted to that duel? The LEGO Star Wars Duel on Geonosis 71507 set seems like a bit “much” to me, and it’s another set I see lingering in stores a bit due to the cancellation of the 3-D release of Episode II. Great to see a realistic-style Count Dooku minifigure back in rotation, however.
LEGO Star Wars JEK-14’s Stealth Starfighter 75018
If ever there was a niche set in LEGO Star Wars, this is it. This is the sole set tying into the “LEGO Star Wars The Yoda Chronicles” cartoon series. I love that Droid and the blueberry Stormtrooper minifigure is definitely interesting, but I’m just not sure about the viability of JEK-14’s Stealth Starfighter 75018 as a popular set. The combination of the cartoon push for “The Yoda Chronicles” and the fact that the Starfighter closely resembles the well-loved E-Wing design (which looks very cool in black) just may be enough to help this set fly out of stores.
LEGO Star Wars AT-TE 75019
The AT-TE has never been one of my favorite vehicles from the Star Wars prequels, and I haven’t bought either of the previous releases of the LEGO AT-TE set (not even the Clone Wars AT-TE, despite my love for the Clone Wars). That said, this will either be my first LEGO Star Wars AT-TE or I’ll be buying that slick LEGO Coleman Trebor minifigure alone on the secondary market.
LEGO Star Wars Jabba’s Sail Barge 75020
This is “The Big One” for Original Trilogy fans–not just because this set is quite large, but because it’s the only Summer 2013 LEGO Star Wars Original Trilogy set! I have regretted not purchasing the original LEGO Jabba’s Sail Barge for years, and this is my most-anticipated LEGO Star Wars 2013 set by a landslide. Likely the last LEGO Jabba’s Palace-themed set that will be released, this set is going to be a mega-seller in stores.
LEGO Star Wars Republic Gunship 75021
Star Wars fans can’t get enough LEGO Republic Gunship sets, and LEGO just can’t stop taking collectors’ money for them–it’s a match made in heaven! This LEGO Star Wars Republic Gunship 75021 is very similar to the Clone Wars Republic Gunship released a few years ago, but considering the prices that that Gunship sells for on the aftermarket, that’s probably a good thing. The Padawan Anakin Skywalker minifigure is this set’s highlight for me.
LEGO Star Wars Mandalorian Speeder 75022
This LEGO Star Wars Mandalorian Speeder 75022 is the only mass-release LEGO Star Wars Clone Wars set of summer 2013. Even though the Clone Wars cartoon series has sadly been cancelled and is no more, this is gonna be one hot set thanks to the inclusion of Mandalorian Supercommandos minifigures and the hugely-anticipated Cyborg Darth Maul minifigure.
LEGO Star Wars HH-87 Starhopper 75024
There’s a good reason that the LEGO HH-87 Starhopper 75024 is going to be a retailer store exclusive: at mass retail, this set would be an utter disaster. The story arc this ship was featured in was pretty unpopular, and the minifigures aren’t exactly in big demand. My wife was a Clone Wars podcaster and even she couldn’t remember what the HH-87 Starhopper was, and once she looked it up, she didn’t want it. This looks like a definite future clearance bin LEGO Star Wars set to me.
LEGO Star Wars Jedi Defender-Class Cruiser 75025
Last but not least, we’ve got the huge LEGO Jedi Defender-Class Cruiser 75025! This is going to be a large and expensive set, but there’s also a strong possibility it’s going to be a store exclusive. If this set inspired by The Old Republic MMORPG computer game is a Toys R Us exclusive, it may end up being even more expensive then we expect! We should find out in the next few weeks exactly where this set will be available and how much money it’s going to see Old Republic fans back.
