There’s not a speck of doubt in my mind as to which LEGO theme I underestimated the most in 2014–it was the new LEGO Mixels theme. I was extremely skeptical about the Mixels from the moment that they were revealed, but the oddball menagerie of cheap, colorful creatures won me over by the time the second series hit stores. And now, with LEGO Mixels Series 1 sets selling for triple their original price already, there’s no question that LEGO has a bonafide hit on their hands! And so, the surprise hit LEGO Mixels Series 4 will roll out in Winter 2015–including the all-new, space-themed LEGO Mixels Orbitronz Tribe sets!
Rather than just being a color we haven’t seen before (like white), the Orbitronz LEGO Mixels creatures will feature a color scheme of white, green, red, black and gold. On paper that sounds like it might be color overload, but when you actually look at the Orbitronz figures it’s easy to be impressed by how striking they are.
My favorite one of the first three Orbitronz is definitely LEGO Niksput 41528. His name is (obviously) the syllables of “Sputnik” rearranged (the first artificial Earth satellite). I really like the LEGO Mixels Niksput’s airplane-like wings on his arms, the fin on his head, and the fact that all four of his limbs are on micro-joints.
It’s hard to get past the flame that appears to be coming out LEGO 41528 Niksput’s behind, but otherwise this is a totally outstanding Mixels toy.
Next up is LEGO Nurp-Naut 41529. Nurp-Naut of the Orbitronz Tribe has gotten half of his name from “astronaut” and half from, well… I really have no idea. “Nurp” sounds like a sound effect that an alien would make to me, but I’ve no clue if LEGO has derived it from some space jargon that I’m not familiar with.
41529 LEGO Nurpnaut has a rocket pack and a huge, singular eye as his most obvious physical features. He’s cute enough and I’ll buy him, but I’m disappointed that the actual toy doesn’t seem to have two eyes like Nurp-Naut is pictured as having on the packaging.
Finally, we’ve got 41527 LEGO Rokit of the Series 4 Mixels Orbitronz Tribe. Rokit is the oddest of the odd when it comes to the Orbitronz, as he seems to have lightsabers for arms (and red Sith lightsabers at that!), and a clear transparent dome showing off his brain (or what passes for it!).
LEGO Mixels Series 4 is scheduled to be released in February 2015, but I would be astonished if we don’t see the sets start to appear in January 2015 (if not sooner). I’ll post an update as soon as the Series 4 LEGO Mixels appear for sale, and you can ‘Like’ Bricks and Bloks on Facebook to have news and photos beamed straight to your Facebook Newsfeed.
How do you like the space-faring LEGO Orbitronz Mixels, LEGO fans? Is Mixels Series 4 off to a strong start, or is this tribe a bit too far-fetched for your tastes?
I was also skeptical of Mixels but changed my mind pretty quick when I actually played with them. I bring them in to help teach my second graders how to follow LEGO directions. They’re perfect for that.
I think that Nurp-naut has another eye on the other side of its head, like many species of fish, and that the artwork on the packaging is a somewhat glorified frontal view.
Polybag sets from other series are even harder to find now with the Mixels taking up that space. I wish the polybags weren’t so deliberately hard to find.
