Over the weekend I chatted up a storm about the upcoming LEGO Elves Azari’s Bakery 41074 set, but that’s not the only LEGO Elves set that made its grand debut online in the last few days. In fact, the final one of the LEGO 2015 Elves sets to be revealed is actually the largest, most grandiose and expensive one of them all–and the only one of the Elves sets including a human mini-doll: it’s the 505-piece LEGO Elves Treetop Hideaway 41075!
This set includes a gray, uh… “Koala bear-looking tiger” and three mini-dolls: repacks of the LEGO Farran mini-doll (the sole boy in the Elves theme) and the LEGO Azari mini doll, as well as one exclusive: a human LEGO Emily mini-doll! I wasn’t expecting a human to show up in this theme, but here she is–backpack and all!
We still have no idea what the storyline behind the LEGO Elves theme is, but it appears based on the inclusion of the human Emily mini-doll in this set that humans can enter the Elven world and interact with Elves. I get a serious “Maleficent” movie vibe from this concept more than “Lord of the Rings” (but without all of the betrayal, hatred and violence, thankfully!).
As the largest set in the theme, the LEGO 41075 Treetop Hideaway set contains 505 pieces and a retail price point of €44,95 (those are Euros, for those not familiar–the equivalent of about $55.70 US). Containing over 500 pieces, I wouldn’t be surprised if this set retailed for $55 in the United States, but I would (obviously) much prefer a $50 MSRP.
What do you think of the largest of the 2015 LEGO Elves sets, collectors? Are you being drawn in by all the colorful tree pieces and the only human mini-doll in the theme, or does this colorful set fall flat with you?
I thought I saw a human girl on the box artwork, but I figured she was supposed to represent a girl playing with the set itself. So she’s a character! That does increase the chances of there being at the very least an excuse plot. Clearly some sort of Down the Rabbit Hole thing (Wonderland/Oz/Narnia/etc.)
I wonder if that blue swirly bit on the right is the portal she come in through. Can she go back and forth at will or is she stuck there until she can collect all the plot coupons (a much beloved device by Lego in recent years)?
In fact, yes, look closely at the box art. Every set but the Treetop Hideaway includes the same map, which according to the box art is hidden in one of the waterfalls at the spa (it’s the secret?). Three of the sets show the elves finding (or using?) a key. Plot coupons confirmed. Are these keys needed to get Emily home? That kind of thing does make for a nice, villain-free, plot line of “explore our pretty magic land and visit our favorite hangout locations that seem a lot like alternate world versions of Lego Friends sets but also happen to be where the ancient artifacts we need are hidden”.
The main question is will there be an animated series that explicitly defines the characters, and where will it be presented? (Cartoon Network? Internet? Series or one-off?)
If you run the set descriptions found at http://catalogs.lego.com/BrandCatalog/de_de/1HY2015/ through translation, it turns out I was exactly correct. There are in fact four keys needed to send Emily home, so there’s at least one more Elves set coming later in 2015.
