I really want to make a “Christmas in July” joke, but that’s so overplayed that I’m going to have to content myself with just referencing the phrase. But as trite as the term “Christmas in July” has become, there’s really no way around mentioning it when discussing one of my favorite days of the year: Hallmark Ornament Premiere Day! Hallmark Ornament Premiere comes but twice a year (no, really–there’s one in October, too), and on this magical day Hallmark stores throughout the country begin selling the year’s new ornaments. And this year, we’re lucky enough to get another LEGO ornaments: it’s the 2014 Hallmark LEGO Star Wars Boba Fett ornament!
And as is becoming tradition, Hallmark has a single LEGO-related ornament for 2014. No, it’s not from The LEGO Movie (sadly): it’s the Hallmark LEGO Star Wars Boba Fett ornament!
For those who aren’t ardent Hallmark ornament collectors (do such people exist?), this is actually the fourth Hallmark LEGO Star Wars ornament. Hallmark began releasing LEGO Star Wars minifigure ornaments in 2011 with the Hallmark LEGO Star Wars Darth Vader ornament, and have released one each year since.
Luckily, for those starting collecting this line late, the previously-released LEGO Star Wars Darth Vader, Stormtrooper and Yoda ornaments are all available online now for around their original retail price (or less!).
Almost as big an attraction as the ornaments for Hallmark Ornament Premiere Day is the refreshment table! I was disappointed to see that this year my local Hallmark store owner didn’t spring for the usual box of Dunkin Donuts Munchkins, though. Evidently, everyone else was disappointed in the homemade cookies too–the wrapping plastic was still on them, untouched, two hours after store opening. Points for making the festive red-and-green Christmas cookies, though!
Oh, wait… back to the subject at hand…
For some reason, Hallmark has deigned to place the Hallmark Boba Fett LEGO Star Wars ornament on the shelf next to the Charlie Brown and Dukes of Hazard ornaments this year. One would think that Boba Fett would sell better if they placed him next to the other Star Wars ornaments on the shelf plan, but in their infinite wisdom, the Hallmark management may know better than I do (though I strongly doubt it).
The Boba Fett LEGO Star Wars Hallmark Ornament is now available in Hallmark stores for $14.95. This isn’t one of the “limited quantity” ornaments, so LEGO Boba Fett should be restocked throughout the year until December. Boba Fett is one of the most popular Star Wars characters and this is a great-looking ornament, so I give this ornament a pretty fair chance of selling out before the Hallmark 2014 After-Christmas sale can arrive.
How do you like this year’s sole Hallmark LEGO ornament, LEGO collectors? Will anyone (besides me) be hanging a LEGO Star Wars Boba Fett ornament on their Christmas tree this year?
Boba Fett seemed to be selling pretty well at our store today. I think they really dropped the ball not having a LEGO Movie ornament. My son has to have an Emmett on his tree (at least, that’s what I think). So I bought one of the light-up key chains to make into an ornament. It’s the perfect size.
I will get Boba Fett soon. I thought about picking it up today, Since it not a limited release I decided to wait a few days. I have the other LEGO Star Wars ornaments. I was really surprised there wasn’t a LEGO movie ornament this year. I wonder if they movie did better than they expected and they didn’t have one designed in time.
In 2012 right after ornament premiere day, at Comic Con they announced the 2013 ornament would be Yoda. So they have a big lead time in some themes.
