LEGO Star Wars The Battle of Hoth 75014 is a 2013 LEGO set that debuted on the Hoth Bricks blog recently, and I wanted to take a minute today to preview and share my thoughts on what feels like I very rehashed and unoriginal LEGO Star Wars set…
The Battle of Hoth 75014, to me, is one of LEGO’s most uncreative Star Wars sets that they’ve released in ages (if not ever). LEGO has seemingly fallen in love with Hoth, because virtually every single component of this set is something that has been consistently and easily available over the last few years.
This is the fifth release of a Snowspeeder in the LEGO Star Wars line, and the third release of a Tauntaun. We just got a Snowspeeder in the 2010 Wampa Cave 8089 set that retired just a few months ago and can still be found without much trouble, as well as in the 2007 Hoth Rebel Base 7666 before that. This version of the Snowspeeder doesn’t even bring much to the table, as it’s only a one-seater and the set only includes a Luke Skywalker and a Snowspeeder Pilot minifigure and not his gunner Dack anyway.
The combination of Hoth Rebel Soldiers and Imperial Snowtrooper minifigures along with the little trench defense cannons and white Speederbike make this set feel more like a bunch of old unsold Battle Packs thrown into a big box than anything else. Given that this set is likely to be an overpriced exclusive, getting so many minifigures and accessories from recent LEGO Star Wars Battle Packs really does not appeal to me.Meanwhile, the updated Imperial Probe Droid is a nice inclusion in the set, but it looks a little bit funky to me and I wince at it being molded in that dark black plastic–it just isn’t right.
The one and only thing in this set that’s really “new” is the Rebel minifigure with grey hair that’s most likely General Rieekan.Unless you’re a hardcore Hoth army-builder or you waited too long to buy the prior LEGO Hoth sets, General Rieekan is the one-and-only major selling point for this set. I can definitely see the LEGO General Rieekan minifigure selling for half the price of this whole set or more on the aftermarket following LEGO 75014 being released at retail.
There’s currently no official information on where The Battle of Hoth set is scheduled to be released or its price, but since it’s been revealed so much later than the other early 2013 sets, it’s likely to be a Toys R Us store exclusive and be priced around $49.99-$54.99. Personally, unless this set is priced considerably lower or goes on sale for a big discount, I’ll be going without LEGO Star Wars The Battle of Hoth 75014 in my collection.
But perhaps I’m being a little harsh on The Battle of Hoth. What are your thoughts on this set, LEGO Stars Wars collectors?
I could not agree more with the above reviewer’s take on this “new” released set…nope, not much “new” here…save your money instead of buying this re-release.
