I’ve never really been into knights. Outside of Lord of the Rings, I’ve never cared for medieval stuff at all, to be honest. So I wasn’t entirely certain that I was going to have enough to say about the 2013 LEGO Minifigures Series 9 Heroic Knight minifigure to fill half a review, much less a full one. But as they’ve been so prone to doing lately, LEGO took me completely by surprise and have completely amazed me with how much I love a figure I was lukewarm to up until I had him in my hands…
This Heroic Knight minifigure has one of the best-looking head designs of any LEGO Collectable Minifigure yet. I assumed he would have a plain and boring, determined or serious expression etched onto his face. Instead, LEGO chose to go the far more charismatic route, giving us a Heroic Knight minifigure with a cocky, full-of-himself grin upon his face.
The Heroic Knight includes a bunch of accessories, and they’re all excellent. He has an armor torso add-on that fits over his body and a helmet with a rotating feather on it, which is more fun to position than you might expect. In addition, the Heroic Knight minifigure’s helm has a positionable visor with eye slits in it. You can only see the Knight’s eyes through the visor, so you’re expecting him to be a hardened warrior until you raise the visor and–voila! He’s clearly egotistical and oozing with self-confidence.
A sword and shield also accompany the Heroic Knight LEGO minifigure. The sword is pretty standard, but the shield is very nice. It has a highly-ornate decoration printed on the front of it, and has a whopping two different handles it can be held by! This works sensationally, as the Heroic Knight can choose whether he wants to hold the shield to his side or directly in front of him, and it looks natural either way.
Within the context of LEGO Minifigures Series 9, the Heroic Knight minifigure has a ton of synergy and is a great complement to the other minifigures in the set. There are plenty of fair damsels for the knight to flirt with, and when he wants to actually do some work, there’s the fearsome Cyclops for him to fight off!
As I said, I don’t particularly care for knights, but this LEGO Heroic Knight Series 9 minifigure definitely captured my heart with his smug personality and wonderfully-executed armor. I don’t see how LEGO could have possibly made this minifigure any better than they did, and he is another absolute must-have figure from LEGO Minifigures Series 9.
